Love on the Blu was promptly ripped with negative reviews on Yelp,
a social networking site that lets users post reviews and rate
businesses. “It sucks,” one commentator wrote about the restaurant. “But
what sucks EVEN more is that the owner a WOMAN is SUPPORTING a CHILD
MOLESTER. Let this place it’s bad food and morally poor owner go out of
Another said, “It really will be our own. The fact that this BLACK
WOMAN could bail out a rapist and an abuser is despicable. You own a
children’s day care. You should be ashamed of yourself. He’s spent
millions of dollars settling cases out of court. And you still think
he’s innocent?! Every day you walk into your daycare I hope you realize
you have failed those children”
The Yelp page says at the top, “This business is being monitored by Yelp’s Support team for content related to media reports.”
There were also calls for a boycott:
R. Kelly was bailed out of jail by his “friend,” Valencia Love on Monday. The 47-year-old, who is a corporate officer for a child care center and a manager of a restaurant, both in Chicago, has come under fire after paying the $100,000 bond. There have been calls for a boycott of the restaurant — Love on the Blu — and many were questioning how a woman who works with children could bring herself to bail out an accused pedophile.
an interview on Tuesday with Chicago reporter Tia Ewing, Love defended
herself by claiming she didn’t condone abuse and insisted the Grammy
Award-winning singer needed a chance to “prove his innocence.”
“He’s not a monster, he’s not,” she said before adding, “He’s been nothing but a gentleman to me.” She also inferred that Kelly was innocent, saying in part that “There are three sides to every story, his side, there’s [sic] (the alleged victims, and the truth.
There may still be more trouble for Kelly. After his release from
jail on Monday, Kelly, 52, drove straight to the flagship McDonald’s in
Chicago’s River North, also known as the Rock ‘n’ Roll McDonald’s. It
was the same location where he allegedly met a teenager who he got
pregnant before arranging for an abortion, according to Jim DeRogatis, the Chicago journalist who has been reporting on Kelly’s sex allegations for decades.
Among the conditions of his release from jail, the judge ordered Kelly not to have contact with females under 18. McDonald’s is, of course, in many places a haven for teenagers.
Patrice Jones, one of Kelly’s many accusers, sued the singer in 2002,
years after he allegedly picked her up as a teenager at the same
Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll McDonald’s in 1998. She claimed Kelly got her
pregnant when she was underage and that he arranged for her to get an
abortion, according to Jim DeRogatis, the Chicago journalist who has been reporting on Kelly’s sex allegations for decades.
Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam was in a blackface scandal earlier this month. Now, his wife is in a controversy after giving Black children raw cotton during a mansion tour.
According to ABC News, Virginia first lady Pam Northam “allegedly gave out raw cotton during a tour of the governor’s mansion and asked Black children to imagine being slaves who were forced to pick cotton.”
According to the Washington Post, Leah Dozier Walker, an employee of the state’s Department of Education, wrote a letter to lawmakers on Feb. 25 because her eight-grade daughter attended the tour. The letter read in part, “The Governor and Mrs. Northam have asked the residents of the Commonwealth to forgive them for their racially insensitive past actions. But the actions of Mrs. Northam, just last week, do not lead me to believe that this Governor’s office has taken seriously the harm and hurt they have caused African Americans in Virginia or that they are deserving of our forgiveness.”
Pam Northam appeared to defend herself in a statement by saying, “I have provided the same educational tour to Executive Mansion visitors over the last few months and used a variety of artifacts and agricultural crops with the intention of illustrating a painful period of Virginia history. I am still committed to chronicling the important history of the Historic Kitchen, and will continue to engage historians and experts on the best way to do so in the future.”
She also said, “I regret that I have upset anyone. I believe it does a disservice to Virginians to omit the stories of the enslaved people who lived and worked there–that’s why I have been engaged in an effort to thoughtfully and honestly share this important story since I arrived in Richmond.”
In case you forgot, after a 1984 photo from Eastern Virginia Medical School went viral, which contained a photograph of two unidentified men, one in blackface and the other in a Ku Klux Klan costume under a page labeled as his, went viral, the Virginia governor Ralph Northam apologized.
However, he later said, according to CNN, that it wasn’t him in the photo, “I believe now and then that I am not either of the people in this photo. This was not me in that picture. That was not Ralph Northam.” He continued, “I intend to continue doing the business of Virginia. I could avoid an honest conversation about harmful actions from my past. I cannot in good conscience choose the path that would be easier for me in an effort to duck my responsibility to reconcile.”
No one answered when a social worker knocked on the door.
Not Shana Decree or her three children. Not her sister or her three children.
All was quiet inside unit S-7 at Robert Morris Apartments – because most of the people who lived there were dead.
It’s not clear why the case worker was checking on the apartment in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, near the Delaware River. But when there was no response Monday afternoon, she asked a maintenance worker to unlock the door, according to court documents.
The scene inside was straight from nightmares: Overturned furniture, shattered glass and clutter throughout the home. Two disoriented women. And five bodies, including three children, in a backroom.
The details come from an affidavit for probable cause, which accuses Shana Selena Decree, 45, and her daughter, Dominique Klaran Decree, 19 – the two who were found alive – of killing the other five.
The two women are each facing five counts of criminal homicide and one count of conspiracy to commit criminal homicide.
It was not immediately clear whether who is representing them.
Authorities identified the victims as Shana Decree’s children Naa’Irah Smith, 25, and Damon Decree Jr., 13; Shana Decree’s sister, Jamilla Campbell, 42; and Campbell’s 9-year-old twin daughters, Imani and Erika Allen. Another relative, Campbell’s 17-year-old son, Joshua, has been found unharmed, police said.
Authorities said that there are no other suspects in the case.
“I am sure that you’re going to ask me why this has occurred and what the motivation is, and as confusing as it was night, we are no closer to understanding that in the harsh light of day,” Bucks County District Attorney Matthew Weintraub said Tuesday during a news conference. “We will continue to pursue every lead and to work this case to its just conclusion. I expect that will be a long and laborious process, but we will always keep Naa’Irah, Damon, Jamilla, Erika and Imani first and foremost in our minds and our hearts as we work to get justice for them.”
Weintraub told reporters Tuesday that authorities are investigating the brutal massacre to determine how exactly the family members died, when it happened and why they may have been killed.
When asked whether it may have been a murder-suicide pact, the district attorney said it was a “potentiality.”
Police responded to the home about 4 p.m. Monday and found Shana and Dominique Decree “disoriented” in bed. The two were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to court records.
Meanwhile, according to the court records, police uncovered a gruesome scene in a backroom in the apartment – one person’s body was face-up on a bed, with his head toward the end and his right foot through the wall to the next room.
Another was on the bed, and one was sitting up against it. One of the children was on the floor. And one person was buried beneath another body.
During an interview with police, Shana and Dominique Decree denied knowing what had happened, then told police Campbell’s boyfriend and two other men had come into the apartment and killed the victims, according to the court records.
Later, Shana Decree told police the victims, including the three children, wanted to die and had been discussing suicide, according to the court records.
Ultimately, police said, Shana and Dominique Decree told investigators about a complicated plan that allegedly involved some of the victims killing each other – at least one of them being choked to death – and then Shana and Dominique Decree killing the rest of them, according to the court documents.
Authorities said the 17-year-old boy, who has since been found safe, was not at home during the killings.
Shana Decree was arraigned in the early hours of Tuesday morning and her daughter, Dominique, was arraigned in the afternoon. Both women are being held without bail, according to booking records.
“I just feel very confident that we have the two killers locked up that committed these atrocious, atrocious murders,” Weintraub, the district attorney, said.
Salazar was the first person to include sex workers’ rights on her campaign platform and go on to win her election. Sex workers and their allies celebrated the win, and now, just three months after being elected, the 27-year-old democratic socialist is staying true to her word.
“The climate of fear of intimidation caused by criminalizing sex work makes it very difficult for sex workers to seek any kind of redress for labor issues or to report the various kinds of abuse many endure in silence,” Salazar said at a press conference Monday. “Sex work is work, and we need to start treating it as
Ramos, who chairs the state Senate’s Committee on Labor, represents New York’s District 13. It includes the neighborhood of Jackson Heights, which has the largest population of transgender people in the country.
“I’ve seen sex workers on Roosevelt Avenue nearly my entire life,” she said. “Decriminalizing sex work will protect [them] from exploitation, allow them to seek protection from trafficking, and will help victims of sex trafficking seek justice.”
New Yorkers must “recognize the most marginalized of our neighbors.”
The legislation already has some co-sponsors. Assemblymembers Dan Quart (D) and Catalina Cruz (D) spoke at the press conference to show their support. After Democrats took control of all three branches of the state government in the midterm elections in November, the topic of sex workers’ rights shifted from fringe issue to the mainstream.
“This is a taboo topic,” Quart said on Monday. “But it can’t be taboo anymore.”
Decriminalization vs. Legalization
The state legislators shared the mic with members of Decrim NY, a coalition of LGTBQ, immigrant rights, harm reduction and criminal justice reform groups. Members of Decrim NY actively called for decriminalizing sex work rather than legalizing it. Sex worker activists have long spoken out in support of decriminalization rather than legalization, saying that legalization does not actually protect workers.
Decriminalization removes criminal penalties for the trading of sex between adults and consenting adult sex workers, Nina Luo, steering committee member Decrim NY, told HuffPost on Monday. Decrim NY will work with Salazar, Ramos and Gottfried on the new legislation.
“The challenge with legalization is that it oftentimes restricts the trade in such a way that it basically still criminalizes workers,” she said.
She pointed to Nevada as an example, where prostitution is legal but regulated in such a way that brothel owners and managers are more empowered than workers. With decriminalization, sex work is regulated the same as any other kind of work ― thus giving sex workers more power to report labor violations such as assault and theft by their clients or law enforcement, she said.
Madison, WI — Rob Mueller-Owens, a positive behavior support coach at a middle school in Wisconsin who was also the acting principal, allegedly attacked and pulled out several braids from an 11-year old African American student after a classroom dispute. The girl’s mother, Mikiea Price, said her daughter called her on February 13 to tell her about the incident. The girl reportedly told her she and her classmate sprayed perfume on themselves in the bathroom before returning to class. The smell apparently activated their teacher’s allergies so she asked who sprayed perfume but no one admitted.
The teacher then asked Mueller-Owens to come in to handle the situation. When the girl eventually admitted she sprayed perfume, she was asked to leave the classroom.
However, as she was walking out of the classroom, Mueller-Owens allegedly began pushing her out, causing her to hit a row of lockers. He also stayed on top of her for about 15 seconds after losing his balance.
The incident was caught on a surveillance video described by Price as a “very disturbing sight to see.” But the video won’t be publicly released until an investigation is completed.
Price added that her daughter has been traumatized and afraid to return to school since the incident.
“Just the whole experience is just traumatic and devastating and just confusing,” Price told the WISC-TV. “I’m just disgusted at this whole incident. You know, I send my kid to school to learn, and that’s a place where mothers send their kids to be comfortable in. I just feel violated in so many ways that this even happened to her.”
Though Price didn’t know exactly how her daughter’s braids were pulled out, she said she was holding three braids and there were bald spots in her scalp when she picked her up at school.
Price said she is planning to take legal actions and sue the Madison Metropolitan School District. She said the school failed to inform her about the incident and also didn’t call any doctor or nurse to examine her daughter.
Meanwhile, the school district said in a written statement that they “take any situation of this nature very seriously.”
Moreover, Mueller-Owens, who once paid a visit to the White House in 2015 for his work with restorative justice, has been placed on leave and banned to return to Whitehorse Middle School, where Price’s daughter goes to school, pending the result of the investigation.
Nationwide — Fashion brand Burberry has apologized for designing a hoodie with a noose around the neck which was showcased during its London Fashion Week show. The design, which received harsh criticism online even from one of the brand’s own models, has already been pulled out from the collection, the fashion house said.“We are deeply sorry for the distress caused by one of the products that featured in our A/W 2019 runway collection,” Burberry CEO Marco Gobbetti said in a statement provided to CNN.
“Though [the] design was inspired by the marine theme that ran throughout the collection, it was insensitive and we made a mistake,” he continued.
Liz Kennedy, the model who wore the hoodie on the show, was the first to express criticism about the noose. She said she tried to object on having the noose placed on her neck, but her concerns were just dismissed.“Suicide is not fashion,” Kennedy wrote on her Instagram post. “It is beyond me how you could let a look resembling a noose hanging from a neck out on the runway.”
Kennedy also noted the “horrifying history of lynching” associated with the noose. However, she claimed that some of the staff were even joking about the design before the show while the noose was hanging from the ceiling.
“I had a brief conversation with someone but all that it entailed was ‘it’s fashion. Nobody cares about what’s going on in your personal life so just keep it to yourself,’” she said.
The UK’s Mental Health Foundation also condemned the design and cited the need for fashion houses to be more careful and diverse in their creative process.
“It is disappointing to see this representation in our day and age considering how much ground we have covered in mental health in recent years,” said Antonis Kousoulis, associate director of research at the charity. “Highly influential global brands like Burberry certainly have a role to play in giving a voice to diverse views, respecting people with lived experience, and being role models.”
Meanwhile, Riccardo Tisci, Burberry’s chief creative officer and the designer of the A/W 2019 “Tempest” collection, apologized over the controversial design as well, saying he now realized it was “insensitive.”
“It was never my intention to upset anyone. It does not reflect my values nor Burberry’s and we have removed it from the collection. I will make sure that this does not happen again,” he added.
Nationwide — Over the years, a disturbingly disproportionate number of Black women and girls across the United States have gone missing. What’s even more alarming is that the media coverage and legislation that missing Black girls are getting seems to be lacking compared to missing white girls.A 2010 study about the media coverage of missing children in the United States discovered that only 20 percent of reported stories focused on missing Black children despite it corresponding to 33 percent of the overall missing children cases. Conclusively, the report said that missing Black youth — especially Black girls — are underreported in the news and it seems that many people don’t even care.
According to reports, when Black girls go missing, it’s often unclear whether they have run away from home, were inflicted violence, abducted, sent into the sex industry, among others. Basically, their safety and assurance to be brought back home was commonly ignored and not an utmost concern.
As of 2014, about 64,000 Black women and girls were missing across the U.S. However, most of those do not receive enough media attention and public support to be found.
In efforts to address the problem of missing Black children nationwide, Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Robin Kelly, and Yvette D. Clarke initiated the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls in 2016. Through the caucus, they hope to create public policies that “eliminate significant barriers and disparities experienced by black women.”
Members of the caucus believe that more federal assistance and collaboration is needed to further eliminate the problem.
“I feel like knocking on every attic, every garage to see where those girls are,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said. “Let’s be an example to the world that we can’t rest until these girls are found.”
Meanwhile, the Black community and organizations utilize social media networks to bring back missing Black girls. Using the hashtag #BlackGirlsMissing, many young women have returned home safely despite the usually limited support from police and minimal reporting from media.

In his most shocking move since becoming president two weeks ago, Donald Trump’s regime is making changes to America’s domestic terrorism programs. He’s officially legalizing religious profiling of Muslims and is removing dangerous white supremacist extremist groups from the watch lists; although they are responsible for most of the domestic terrorism that occurs in America.
The program, “Countering Violent Extremism,” or CVE, would be changed to “Countering Islamic Extremism” or “Countering Radical Islamic Extremism,” the sources said, and would no longer target groups such as white supremacists who have also carried out bombings and shootings in the United States.
Authorities have blamed radical and violent ideologies as the reason a white supremacist shot nine Black people inside a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, and Islamist militants for shootings and bombings in California, Florida, and New York. A reporter tweeted that getting rid of the tracking of America’s homegrown extremists such as the KKK, “patriot” groups, and neo-Nazi groups, will hamper all that the CVE program does to track known hate groups and criminal enterprises.
The Republican Party has made it a point to instill Islamophobia into public policy and now terrorism will only be referred to as “radical Islam.” This policy is a strategy by the Trump administration to give false justification for his Muslim ban which affects one out of every eight Muslims worldwide from seven countries. The removal of white supremacists and violent extremist groups from federal tracking programs appears to be a direct move by Trump’s advisor, Steve Bannon to foster racial hatred and religious discrimination. Trump’s administration has already removed the CVE’s 5-point counterterrorism strategy page from the State Department’s website.READ Video: Black Musician Explains How and Why He Became Friends With White Supremacists
Reuters’ news agency has said Trump’s attempt to brand terror as something solely carried out by Islamic groups is impractical and extremely unproductive. The news agency noted:
Hoda Hawa, director of policy for the Muslim Public Affairs Council, said she was told last week by people within DHS that there was a push to refocus the CVE effort from tackling all violent ideology to only Islamist extremism. “That is concerning for us because they are targeting a faith group and casting it under a net of suspicion,” she said.
While some Republicans in Congress have pressed the use of the term “radical Islam” as a strategy to help focus deterrence efforts; others have said it’s a terrible way to ostracize over three million people in America that practice Islam in a peaceful manner.
Those who oppose the Trump proposal of only singling out Muslims as possible terrorist, feel his program will make it that much more difficult for Muslims to trust his administration. Especially considering the fact he just signed an executive order banning Muslims from seven predominantly Muslim nations from entering America only one week after being in office.
For several years now, American law enforcement agencies have said the greatest risk of domestic terrorism comes from white supremacists or terrorists like the KKK, neo-Nazis, and those who share their viewpoint. Which is in stark contrast to groups like al-Qaeda, who are more focused on exploiting the struggle for control in the Middle East.
It makes obvious sense that America needs to be vigilant against ISIS-inspired attacks but the government also has to pay attention to white supremacist hate groups as well.
Corporal C.B. Fleming may not run around the city wearing a cape and mask, but the neighborhood kids still call him Batman.
The 42-year-old police officer is something of a local celebrity in South Hill, Virginia. He was given the affectionate nickname after he spent an afternoon ensuring that a group of children felt safe following a gas leak.
Fleming was just one of the emergency crew members who arrived at Iesha Roper-Boswell’s home in response to the dispatch call last week. Once the house was deemed safe, he started chatting with Roper-Boswell.
As they talked, the 28-year-old mother mentioned to Fleming that her daughter, niece, and fellow neighborhood kids were afraid of cops.
She was then stunned when – shortly after their conversation – she saw Fleming lying in the grass so he could play with the children. Not only that, the kids were happy to have another playmate, regardless of his uniform.
Roper-Boswell pulled out her phone and captured a quick video of the heartwarming moment. Since uploading it to Facebook, it has been viewed thousands of times.
In addition to being a father of four biological and two adopted children, Fleming has been working at the South Hill Police Department in Virginia for the last 15 years, and he says that he has always strived to be a positive part of his community.
“It’s something I’ve always tried to do,” Fleming told WTVR of his interaction with the children. “When I got into this job, I knew there was something different, other than just writing tickets and being the bad person all the time. I figured if I could be that bright spot in someone’s day then that’s all that mattered.”
And based on his latest interactions with the kids, it seems that he has succeeded
“He’s awesome. That’s the only word you can really use to describe C.B.,” Roper-Boswell told the news outlet. “It’s just amazing, the bond he has with the children.
“For him to make my child feel like she’s safe, she doesn’t even have to call 911, she just has to call C.B. if she’s in trouble. I’m glad he made this part of his job. He’s changed my daughter and niece’s lives.”

Bail was set at $2 million Saturday for four men accused of invading the home of family in Lombard, trying them up, robbing them and then leading cops on a high-speed chase in the western suburb.
Mashawn Barnes, 27; Kevin Jones, 31; and Dion Young, 20, all of Chicago; and Calvert Williams, 29, of Matteson, are each charged with a felony count of armed robbery in connection to a home invasion at an apartment on Foxworth Boulevard, the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office said in a statement.
If convicted, they could each face between 21 and 45 years in prison each, prosecutors said.
On Friday, a woman and her daughter entered their home at 3:35 p.m. as two of the men, armed and wearing masks, approached and entered the building before the door closed, prosecutors said.
Once inside, the men each pointed a gun at their heads and ordered them into their home, the state’s attorney’s office said. Inside the apartment, the men tied up the woman and someone else who had been sleeping there. The men stole cash, a handgun and other items before fleeing in a vehicle waiting in a parking lot.
As the men left, the woman freed herself and called police with details about the fleeing vehicle, prosecutors said. Lombard officers found a vehicle matching the description and tried to pull it over, but the driver sped off at 75 mph down Roosevelt Road, prosecutors said.
Williams, Jones and Barnes are also charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, prosecutors said. Young was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and Barnes was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding.
The vehicle crashed twice at North and Villa avenues in Villa Park, and all four men exited the vehicle, prosecutors said. Barnes was arrested near the vehicle, and the three others were arrested in a wooded area nearby.
“The terror allegedly caused by these men — forcing their way at gunpoint into an innocent woman’s apartment, tying up their victims and stealing money, other items of value and a gun before fleeing — is almost unimaginable,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement.
A man was killed and another wounded Friday as shooting erupted into a group of people arguing on a street in Gage Park on the Southwest Side.
The group of people began arguing about noon in the 5500 block of South Spaulding Avenue when shots rang out, Chicago police said.
A 20-year-old man was struck in the arm and Antoine Grant, 34, was shot multiple times, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. The men were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where Grant died within the hour.
An autopsy released Saturday found Grant died from multiple gunshot wounds. He lived in the Austin neighborhood, the medical examiner’s office said.
Witnesses told investigators they saw a back SUV flee from the scene, police said.
Area Central detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. No one is in custody, police said Saturday.
Queen Latifah has broken barriers in both the music and entertainment industries and now she plans on doing the same in real estate. In an effort to level the playing field when it comes to housing equity in her hometown of Newark, the Star actress is creating an affordable housing complex in the city, NJ.comreported.
The project—which is reportedly going to cost $14 million—will be a community of multi-family townhouses, the news outlet writes. The homes—which will be located on Springfield Ave. and South 17th Street—will include 20 three-family townhomes and an additional mix-use building that will have 16 units. The mix-use building will feature a fitness center and commercial space that will be used by nonprofit organizations. 60 of the units will be market rate starting with a price of $1,800 and 16 of the units will be affordable and based on an individual’s income.
The project is being led by BlueSugar Corporation—where Latifah serves as co-president—and GonSosa Development. BlueSugar Corporation has been on a mission to revitalize struggling neighborhoods across the country and GonSosa Development has reconstructed and developed over 1,000 units.
There is a need for affordable housing in Newark and those who are involved in the project are excited about making change. “They understand how difficult it is to make ends meet for many residents and want to be part of the solution. They remain dedicated to making life better in communities like Newark,” said Cristina Pinzon who serves as a spokeswoman for the developers. Like other cities across the country, Newark is experiencing an affordability crisis where many longtime residents are at risk of being displaced due to gentrification.
News about Queen Latifah’s plans comes nearly a month after NFL star Marshawn Lynch shared that he was going to purchase real estate in his hometown of Oakland so that people who have lived in the community for decades wouldn’t be pushed out.
Marietta, GA — As we celebrate Black History Month, inventor of the PuffCuff® Hair Clamp and the first black woman to hold two natural hair accessory patents, Ceata Lash, stands out as a living legend who is blazing a new path in the hair industry. Her rise to success is chronicled in her newly released mini-documentary, which is accessible at www.ThePuffCuff.com. This documentary offers viewers a raw, honest story of how Ceata Lash turned her idea born out of personal frustration into a global empire for textured and curly hair accessories.About 12 years ago Ceata decided to stop chemically straightening her hair. “I actually had no idea what the hair growing out of my scalp would look like, so I didn’t know how to take care of it… Ever since the days of Madam CJ Walker, all we’ve ever known was straight hair,” Ceata states in the opening of the mini-documentary. After much research on natural hair styling, she found that most of the current hair accessories were designed with a bias towards straight hair. Ceata felt it wasn’t fair and realized she was facing a problem bigger than just her. She, along with many others with textured hair, needed a product to style thick, natural hair in an afro puff without the breakage or pain usually associated with using rubber or elastic bands that tug and rip the hair. “All I needed was something to hold my hair, not cinch it down,” she explains in the mini-documentary.
The mini-documentary continues where Ceata’s recounts her experience working as a senior graphic designer at a community college where she was the only black person in the department. During this time, she began experimenting with ways to style her natural hair, so that she would feel comfortable in a predominantly white environment. She decided to keep her hairstyling simple with a single afro puff but in order to achieve this style, Ceata had to use boot length shoestrings to gather her thick mane into a puff and keep it in place. However, she found that the tension and tightness created unbearable headaches throughout the day. She was sure others were suffering through the same issue. It was this very reason that inspired her to create a solution that ultimately became known as the PuffCuff– the only clamp for thick, curly hair on the market. The PuffCuff launched in 2013, and in 2017 Ceata became the first black woman to hold two natural hair accessory patents.
Over the years, Ceata and her innovative PuffCuff have been featured in Allure, Kontrol Magazine, Marie Claire, Black Enterprise, and more media outlets. In 2018, the leadership team of beauty retail pioneer, Sally Beauty, chose to grant Ceata the President’s Innovation Award for her invention of the ingenious PuffCuff as a part of Sally Beauty’s Cultivate Program. This program is aligned with Sally Beauty’s new business accelerator initiatives to help women beauty entrepreneurs grow their businesses. As a result of having received this coveted recognition, PuffCuff was granted fast track distribution into all 3,000 Sally Beauty stores and website by the end of 2019.
Toward the end of the mini-documentary, Ceata ends offering some words of encouragement, “Don’t give up. Keep running when you’re tired, and you don’t stop until the Lord tells you too. And he hasn’t told us to.”
A proven success story, Ceata’s legacy will serve to help pave the way for ushering in future generations of black inventors, especially those seeking to contribute to breakthroughs within the beauty industry. As for Ceata, she’ll remain on the front lines toward innovating solutions to end common beauty and grooming problems, all while further solidifying her spot as a game-changer in black history.
Baltimore, MD — The family of Korryn Gaines, who was shot and killed by a police officer three years ago, is disappointed after a Baltimore County judge has overturned the decision of a jury that awarded them over $38 million in damages for her wrongful death. In 2016, local police officers went to Gaines’ apartment to serve an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court for two different charges. Gaines, who was found inside the apartment with her boyfriend and her two children, allegedly pointed a gun at the officers.
After a 6-hour standoff, police officers fired shots when she allegedly threatened to kill them, although their neighbors told different stories. Gaines was fatally shot and her now-6-year-old son, Kodi, was injured.
Her family filed a lawsuit against Baltimore County Police and Cpl. Royce Ruby, the officer who fatally shot her, claiming that they used excessive force. The jury sided with the family and last year, they were awarded $38 million in damages, which included $33 million to her son, Kodi, $4.5 million to her daughter, Karsyn, and $9,000 to her parents and estate.
However, Judge Mickey J. Norman recently dismissed the claims and denied the family of the award. Norman stated in his ruling that Ruby’s actions were “objectively reasonable” and did not violate her rights against unlawful seizure. He noted the “qualified immunity” that protect law enforcement and government officials from civil liability when doing their job.
Gaines’ family said that they are planning to appeal the judge’s ruling.
“It’s devastating to a certain extent, but they’re a very faithful family,” J. Wyndal Gordon, the family’s attorney, told The Baltimore Sun. “It’s not over.”
Baltimore, MD — Three 14-year-old teens and a 12-year-old boy are now facing charges in connection with their alleged gang rape of a 19-year old woman whom they abducted after she stepped out the bus in Baltimore.Wilmer Ramos, Philip Worrell, and Nile Campbell, who were all 14-years old, were charged as adults with first- and second-degree rape after the sexual assault that happened on the night of February 6.
A 12-year-old boy who was with them at the scene during the sexual assault was also charged but as a juvenile. He faces charges of first-degree rape, third- and fourth-degree sex offense, conspiracy kidnapping, conspiracy robbery, perverted practice, and illegally possessing a handgun.
The victim, a 19-year-old woman whose name wasn’t released, had reportedly just got off a bus and was walking back to her house in Baltimore when the teens and the boy approached her and threatened her with a handgun. She was forced to a backyard full of rubbish, beer bottles, and old mattresses where she was allegedly raped at gunpoint.
Police said that as the three teens were sexually assaulting the woman, neighbors heard noises and went out of their house to identify where it is coming from.
The four attackers were interrupted and they fled from the scene. Two of them were caught later on when school police recognized them. School police cooperated with sex offense detectives and the two other suspects were captured after they were identified from the photos.
The still-not-sorry editor and publisher of an Alabama county newspaper has resigned and turned over control of his publication to a black woman following outrage over his editorial calling for the “Ku Klux Klan to night ride again.”
Goodloe Sutton told the Montgomery Advertiser on Friday that the Democrat-Reporter now has a new “publisher, owner and editor.” He refused to explain whether he had sold the publication in Linden, in western Alabama, or simply turned over control, calling the reporter “dumb” for asking, according to the Advertiser.
A news release from the Democrat-Reporter announced that local woman Elecia Dexter became publisher and editor on Thursday. Dexter is African-American and has worked at the newspaper for several years, according to the Plainsman. Dexter told The Associated Press that, although she will run the 3,000-circulation newspaper, Sutton will continue to own it.
The statement said Dexter would continue the newspaper’s 140-year-old tradition of providing “quality news” as well as “moving the paper into a new direction.”
Sutton, 80, wrote in his editorial last week that it was time for “the Ku Klux Klan to night ride again” as he complained about Washington “Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats plotting to raise taxes in Alabama.” The white supremacist Klan carried out murderous lynchings and other attacks on black people and their supporters during their night rides.
He later told the Advertiser, “If we could get the Klan to go up there and clean out D.C., we’d all been better off.” Asked to explain what he meant, he responded: “We’ll get the hemp ropes out and loop them over a tall limb and hang all of them.”
He also insisted the Klan “didn’t kill but a few people” and “wasn’t violent until they needed to be.”
The community had complained for years about the racist perspective of the editorial page, the Advertiser reported.
The statement from the Democrat-Reporter said that the “Sutton family devoted this newspaper to integrity and excellence in journalism which has been led over the past 50-plus years by Goodloe Sutton and his [late] wife, Jean.”
It added that “Ms. Dexter is coming in at a pivotal time for the newspaper and you may have full confidence in her ability to handle these challenging times.”
Here’s the Democrat-Reporter’s full statement on Sutton stepping down:
The Democrat-Reporter is pleased to announce effective February 21, 2019, Elecia R. Dexter will be the Publisher and Editor of the newspaper going forward. Attorneys representing the family of Harvey Hill, who died nine months ago at the Madison County jail, announced on Tuesday that they filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the sheriff and other officials, the Clarion-Ledger reported.
Hill was arrested for trespassing on May 6 and died in custody one day later.
Part of the family’s frustration is that after nine months they still have no official answers about the exact cause of Hill’s death. They don’t believe that Hill, 36, died from possible cardiac arrest, as they were told. The family believes he died after jail guards “brutally” beat him.
“That is totally unacceptable,” attorney Carlos Moore said, noting that the family still has not received an official autopsy report. “Had the results been in the county’s favor, they would have released them by now.”
Hill’s death was one of three such deaths at the jail in 2018, in which families suspect foul play. Larry Thompson, 51, died three days after his release from the jail in November. And in December, Lanekia Michelle Brown, 37, was four weeks pregnant when she was reportedly found dead in her jail cell.
The lawsuit accuses the jail guards of beating and pepper-spraying Hill while he was handcuffed because he failed to show proper respect to one of the guards. They allegedly returned Hill without medical care to his cell, where he was found dead.
In Brown’s case, she was reportedly discovered dead in her cell when a nurse went to check on her after she had complained about having stomach pains, according to the official account. Brown’s mother said she was not allowed to see her daughter’s remains in the days after her death. She demanded answers but received no explanation about how she died.
Moore, who is also representing Brown’s family, said at a news conference in January that he was looking into whether Brown was given proper medical care. He suspected that jail officials discriminated against her.
Thompson’s family said he was healthy when he walked into the jail but was nearly unconscious and unable to walk when he was released. While incarcerated, Thompson called home and said he had been beaten, his son recalled. The family said witnesses at the prison also told them that jail officials had assaulted Thompson. They too are demanding answers.
The killing of a Black teenager in Brazil, which has a long history of police violence against Afro-Brazilians, sparked a movement to protect Black lives. This comes against the backdrop of a new law-and-order Brazilian president coming to power with an anti-Black agenda.

A 14-year-old Texas girl has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for stabbing her friend to death during an argument over a sleepover.
The teen from Fort Worth, who is not named due to her age, stabbed Nylah Lightfoot, 14, in the chest and neck when she went to pick up her clothes from her friend’s home on May 29, 2018.
Many are comparing Pedro Gonzaga in Brazil to Eric Garner.
The killing of a Black teenager in Brazil, which has a long history of police violence against Afro-Brazilians, sparked a movement to protect Black lives. This comes against the backdrop of a new law-and-order Brazilian president coming to power with an anti-Black agenda.
Demonstrators rallied in five major cities in Brazil after the death on Feb. 14 of 19-year-old Pedro Gonzaga whom a supermarket security guard choked—fueling a Black Lives Matter movement, the Guardian reported.
It’s unclear exactly what led to the confrontation. The security guard reportedly used a sleeper hold on Gonzaga, who died of a heart attack at a hospital. A video showed at least one bystander pleading with the security guard to stop. “He is suffocating him,” a woman is heard saying on a video of the incident. Gonzaga was taken unconscious to the hospital.
Parallels to Eric Garner, the unarmed African-American man who died after a New York City cop used a chokehold to arrest him, were widely noted by the demonstrators.
“There has never been a Black Lives Matter [movement] in Brazil to compare to the United States, but this year I think it will happen more often because the black community is more and more united,” Rene Silva, a protest organizer in Rio, said.
In July 2018, Amnesty International, a global human rights organization, noted that police killings of Black youths in Brazil continue 25 years after the infamous Candelária massacre, in which eight young boys were killed by off-duty police officers in Rio de Janeiro. The incident sparked international outrage, yet little has changed more than two decades later.
“The struggle to protect Black Brazilian youths from police violence and deliver justice for the victims of the past remains as vital and relevant as ever,” Amnesty International said.
Unfortunately, things seem unlikely to change any time soon. In January, far-right politicianJair Bolsonaro, who was once on trial for racism, was sworn in as Brazil’s president. He has a long history of making hateful comments about women, the LGBT community and Afro-Brazilians.
Drug dealers kill people, destroy families and might deserve the death penalty or life in prison for their crimes, President Trump says.
Trump, speaking at a rally Saturday in Pennsylvania for congressional candidate Rick Saccone, said he got the idea from the leaders of China and Singapore. The U.S. criminal justice system, Trump said, is too soft on drugs.
“You kill 5,000 people with drugs because you’re smuggling them in and you are making a lot of money and people are dying. And they don’t even put you in jail,” Trump said. “That’s why we have a problem, folks. I don’t think we should play games.”
Trump said he recently asked the president of Singapore if that country has a drug problem.
“He said ‘We have a zero tolerance policy. That means if we catch a drug dealer, death penalty,'” Trump said.
Trump said he wasn’t sure whether the nation would be accepting of such a harsh penalty. But he said drug dealers destroy families.
“We can’t just keep setting up blue ribbon committees” that do nothing but “talk, talk, talk,” Trump said.
Trump has floated the idea before. Less than two weeks ago, Trump suggested “very strong” penalties to help address the nation’s growing problem with opioid addiction.
“Some countries have a very, very tough penalty — the ultimate penalty,” Trump said. “And, by the way, they have much less of a drug problem than we do.”
Last May, Trump congratulated Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte for a “great job” in his crackdown on drugs. Duterte has boasted about personally shooting and killing at least three crime suspects. Human rights groups and the United Nations have condemned Duterte’s vigilante-style campaign that has left thousands of suspected drug dealers and users dead.
Trump acknowledged Saturday that his idea might have dissenters.
“Probably you’ll have some people who say ‘Oh, that’s not nice,” Trump said. “But we have to do something.”
In February 2015, three teenage schoolgirls left the comfort of their homes in East London and traveled to Syria to join the self-styled Islamic State (IS). Around 60 women and girls are thought to have made the same journey from Britain. The story of their disappearance dominated the UK press for weeks and the blame game inevitably began to hunt out whose fault it was. When the families of Amira Abase, Shamima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana found out that the police had been interviewing the trio about another girl from their school who had already joined IS, the case was picked up for investigation by the government. But soon certain sections of the press would turn on the families themselves. VICE News gained intimate access to the father of one girl, Amira, and joined him as he dealt with the press and parliament to find out what it’s like for those left behind by the tragic choices of their loved ones.
The apparently cozy relationship between an Oregon police lieutenant and the leader of a right-wing group has renewed unanswered questions about the infiltration of police departments by white supremacists.
On Tuesday, the Portland Police Commanding Officers Association filed a grievance against city officials for violating a contract provision that bars them from publicly reprimanding police supervisors, OregonLive.com reported.
Mayor Ted Wheeler called for an investigation last week into hundreds of text messages exchanged between Portland Police Lt. Jeffrey Niiya and Joey Gibson, the leader of the far-right group Patriot Prayer, which has organized violent demonstrations in the city.
Wheeler said he was disturbed by what he learned after reading an expose published by Willamette Week on Feb. 14. “Community members have long expressed concerns about police bias during demonstrations. Incidents like this contribute to the distrust that so many people have about the Portland Police Bureau,” he said in a statement.
Historically, police departments were an instrument to enforce segregation and other racist policies. It’s no wonder that the FBI has warned about ongoing relationships between white supremacists and police departments
In October 2006, the FBI published a report titled “White Supremacist Infiltration of Law Enforcement,” in which the agency discussed the threat of white supremacist groups permeating police departments to hamper investigations and to recruit like-minded officers. It’s unclear whether police officials ever heeded the warning, PBS.org said a decade after the report was issued.
There is a lot of history at the root of the alliance between white supremacy and law enforcement. As part of its program to address racially biased law enforcement, the District of Columbia’s police department has sent officers to the African American History Museum to learn about that history.
“People who were supposed to serve and protect had played in the enforcement of discriminatory, racist and unjust policies and laws,” Police Chief Peter Newsham said standing outside the African American History Museum when the program was announced in 2018. “The museum includes very honest and poignant stories of the role that policing played in some of the historical injustices in our country.”
In Portland, Niiya’s texts and emails with Gibson show him sometimes telling Gibson about the movements of counter-protesters, going so far as to tell Gibson if officers would be on foot or bike at protests.
“It is imperative for law enforcement to remain objective and professional, and in my opinion, these text messages appear to cross several boundaries,” the mayor said.
ALERT: #Baker, LA – 35y/o Nahendra Faye Davis last seen 12/27/18 at about 4:45 p.m. She dropped off her children at her mother’s home in the Glen Oaks area of #Baton Rouge. Davis’ unoccupied vehicle was found around Scenic Hwy. and 72nd Ave.
A Queens cop on her way to work rescued a badly-bleeding motorcyclist in a hit-and-run crash on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
Officer Mandeep Kaur was driving in her personal car to the 114th Precinct in Astoria when she spotted the woman on the eastbound shoulder of the highway, near Exit 43 in Woodside.
Kaur pulled over and told the 30-year-old woman to sit in the passenger seat while she called the 114th precinct to let her colleagues know she had stopped for an accident, and she’d be late for work.
After Kaur made the call, the motorcyclist told her her arm felt numb
Kaur helped her remove her leather jacket. “Blood started gushing out, and she was bleeding heavily,” the officer said.
She spotted a two-inch wound on the woman’s left arm, and quickly put her police academy training to use.
“The first thing from my training I remember is, if someone is heavily bleeding, you apply a tourniquet,” said Kaur. “I called the precinct again and I let them know she’s injured really badly, and to rush the ambulance.”
About 10 minutes later, an ambulance pulled up to take the woman to Elmhurst Hospital. She was reported in stable condition on Thursday night. Her name was not released.
The motorcyclist — who was on her way to work at a Con Ed facility in Astoria — told Kaur that a red tractor trailer without a license plate was switching lanes when it hit her and her bike. The driver did not stay on the scene, and cops said they were still looking for the vehicle Thursday evening.
EMTs said that Kaur’s decision to apply a tourniquet to the motorcyclist’s arm probably saved her life, the motorcyclist told the officer later.
Survivors say rape has become “just a normal thing” for women caught up in South Sudan’s civil war
When government forces launched their attack on the village of Bauw in South Sudan’s Unity state in early summer, Nyaduri and several other women fled into the bush.
Their hiding place only gave them protection for so long. Fighters soon followed them.
In the end Nyaduri was spared, thanks to her visibly swollen pregnant belly. But she was made to watch as armed men raped four of her companions.
“If you run they will kill you, so you just close your eyes so you don’t see the rapes,” Nyaduri (not her real name) told us at the UN base near the town of Bentiu, where tens of thousands of people have fled in recent months.
After decades of vicious civil war, the world’s youngest nation enjoyed a brief period of calm after independence in 2011, before being plunged into a fresh conflict.
The violence in South Sudan — often gruesome, sometimes targeting civilians merely for their ethnicity or perceived political allegiance — has displaced 2 million people, and famine threatens too.
But new evidence suggests that the war’s toll on women and girls is particularly horrific.
Surge in Sexual Violence
In late April, South Sudan’s government, using its own soldiers and allied militia fighters, began a multi-pronged military campaign in Unity state to recapture territory held by rebels loyal to former vice president Riek Machar.
Amid the killing of civilians, widespread pillaging of cattle, and destruction of homes, scores of women have been subjected to appalling sexual violence. We documented dozens of cases of rape, including gang rapes. Almost every person we met had heard of or knew someone that government forces or their allied militias had raped. One woman said that rape had become “just a normal thing.”
Another woman told us that she was forced at gunpoint to watch militiamen gang rape her two adult daughters and then torture one of them. “They grabbed [my older daughter] and held her down in a fire and burned her face, her shoulder, and the length of her body,” she said. “They let go of her and left when she caught on fire.”
Women who evaded rape consider themselves fortunate “merely” to have been beaten. Women of all ages, including the elderly, were often battered with ropes or sticks. One woman was beaten so hard she had a miscarriage.
The militia fighters also abducted women and girls. Some raped women before kidnapping them as “wives” while taking others to put to work. Women and children were sometimes made to carry looted goods or to herd stolen cattle away from their villages on journeys that could last several days. Women were also forced to cook for fighters and were beaten as they worked. Many women are likely still in captivity.
The recent government offensive has prompted around 100,000 people in Unity state to flee their homes. Since April, 30,000 of them have sought refuge at the UN camp near Bentiu. Although UN peacekeepers protect the camp, women and girls remain at risk of sexual violence inside the camp, especially when collecting water or using unlit latrines at night. And leaving the camp poses threats too, especially the four-hour trek to collect firewood that requires crossing front lines around Bentiu.
The sheer scale of the crimes committed in the past few months is shocking, but the brutality of the assaults is sobering, too. Not only were many women gang raped in full view of others, but those who were too badly injured to attempt the journey to the UN camps and were left behind to fend for themselves.
Dealing with Atrocities
South Sudan’s justice system simply does not have the capacity to deal with crimes on this scale, and the government lacks the political will. These abuses have persisted because of decades of impunity.
The UN Security Council urgently needs to step in. It must either help establish an independent hybrid court or refer crimes committed in South Sudan to the International Criminal Court. The Security Council should also establish an arms embargo on both government and rebel forces.
Such moves may not help end the conflict, but they could help break the horrific cycle of violence engulfing South Sudan.
Unlike Nyaduri, who could only shut her eyes to escape the horrors unfolding in front of her, the international community has a choice. Its choice should be to open its eyes, see, and act. The women of South Sudan deserve no less.
Nearly two and a half years after 15-year-old Demetrius Griffin was burned to death on the West Side, his family has announced the reward for information about his killer has increased to $15,000.
Griffin, a freshman at Steinmetz High School, was found inside a burning trash can in the Austin neighborhood on Sept. 17, 2016. Officers discovered his body when they responded to a call of a refuse fire in the 5500 block of West Cortez Street.
The teenager’s death was ruled a homicide and an autopsy later determined he had been burned alive. His case has remain unsolved.
New contributions from community and faith leaders increased the reward from $10,000, Griffin’s aunt Rochelle Sykes said Monday.
Sykes said her family continues to be “heartbroken” by her nephew’s death.
Griffin’s image — along with those of four other child victims of Chicago violence — is included in a stained glass window at the West Side New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 4301 W. Washington Blvd. The window, Sykes said, will be officially unveiled Sunday.
Sykes said it’s important that people don’t hear about these cases and forget. For low-income families from poor neighborhoods, Sykes said, homicides are all too often “swept up under the rug.”
“That’s not right,” Sykes said. “No child deserves what he got. My family has no closure … and this city is doing nothing.”
An 11-year-old student in Florida is facing charges after refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and creating a disturbance in the classroom, police said.
The boy was arrested for causing a disruption and refusing repeated instructions from school staff and law enforcement, Polk County Public Schools spokesperson Kyle Kennedy said in a statement. He was not arrested for refusing to participate in the pledge – even though students have the right to do so by Florida law and district policy.
The sixth-grader from a Tampa suburb allegedly told his substitute teacher the flag is “racist” and the national anthem is offensive to black people, Bay News 9 reported, citing a statement the teacher gave the district.
In response, the teacher said she asked the student why not go to another place to live if it was “so bad here.” She said he answered, “They brought me here.”
The substitute, identified by district officials as Ana Alvarez, said, “Well, you can always go back because I came here from Cuba and the day I feel I’m not welcome here anymore, I would find another place to live.”
Alvarez said she called the office on Feb. 4 because she did not want to keep “dealing with him,” according to her statement. An officer and a school administrator tried to calm the student, the Lakeland Police Department said in a Sunday night press release. The administrator asked him to leave the classroom more than 20 times, police said, and the student allegedly made threats while being escorted to the office.
Police transported the Lawton Chiles Middle Academy student to the Juvenile Assessment Center and charged him with disrupting a school function and resisting an officer without violence, the Lakeland Police Department said.
Officers would not arrest a student for not standing during the Pledge of Allegiance, public information officer Gary Gross told USA TODAY on Sunday, but, in general, would arrest a student for screaming, yelling and making threats.
Dhakira Talbot, the boy’s mother, told Bay News 9 that she wants the charges dropped. She denied the arrest affidavit accusing her son of threatening to beat the teacher, the station reported.
“She was wrong. She was way out of place,” Talbot told Bay News 9. “If she felt like there was an issue with my son not standing for the flag, she should’ve resolved that in a way different manner than she did.”
Alvarez no longer works as a substitute in the district, Kennedy said, adding that the teacher did not know students weren’t required to participate in the pledge. The district will also review training for substitutes, Kennedy said.
First Amendment rights prevent schools from requiring students to recite the pledge or salute the flag, the Supreme Court ruled in 1943.
A 21-year-old Florida woman allegedly attacked her fiance for not wanting to have sex and wound up spending the night in jail — but not until she spat on cops too.
Vero Beach cops picked up a “naked and belligerent” Samantha Hernandez after her fiancé fled their home in a ripped shirt with abrasions on his face and neck, according to the Sebastian Daily.
Hernandez allegedly propositioned her partner, then began attacking him after he rejected her, “striking him in the face and ripping his shirt,” according to police.
The man then allegedly went outside for a walk to “cool off,” at which point he called police.
When police apprehended Hernandez shortly after midnight Monday, she angrily yelled “I didn’t do anything!” but, according to cops, “was too intoxicated to advise any further.”
Once inside the police cruiser, Hernandez allegedly banged her head on the inside of the car until she appeared to have knocked herself out. When an officer went to check on the off-duty cashier, she opened her eyes and “maliciously spit on his arm while yelling profanities,” according to the Sebastian Daily.
Hernandez was transported to the Indian River County Jail, where she was held on $6,000 bail and charged with a felony count of battering a police officer and battery domestic violence.
The victim’s mother Anntoinette Carter claimed that the mother of the then-13-year-old suspect stood by and watched the altercation between the two girls unfold, without stepping in.
The defendant was found guilty of murder but not guilty on aggravated assault charges in Tarrant County court on Thursday, and faced a minimum sentence of probation and maximum of 40 years in prison.

A 14-year-old girl has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for stabbing her friend to death during an argument over a sleepover on May 29, 2018, in Fort Worth, Texas. Victim Nylah Lightfoot, 14, is pictured
The girl will be held in a Texas Juvenile Justice Department facility, according to presiding Judge Alex Kim.
The court will determine whether to transfer her to an adult prison or grant her leniency on or before her 19th birthday.
Carter delivered a victim’s impact statement after the sentence was announced, telling her daughter’s killer: ‘When they told me it was you, it hurt. You was at my house every day.’
The heartbroken mother said that her daughter wanted to become a makeup artist, and that would sneak into her bedroom to get makeup for herself and the friend.
Now, Carter said, she will never get to see that passion again, nor will she see her daughter go to prom, graduate high school or get married.
‘You spent her last birthday with us. I don’t know how I come back from this,’ she said through tears.
Carter had previously described her daughter and the suspect as ‘on-and-off’ friends.
On the day she was killed, Nylah asked if the girl could sleepover, to which Carter said no, according to The Star-Telegram.
Then the suspect asked Nylah to come over and retrieve clothes she had swapped with the teen.
When she arrived at the girl’s Fort Worth apartment complex, the pair got into an altercation that turned deadly.
The little girl was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital for her neck and chest wounds where she was pronounced dead, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.
‘Now I’m daughterless. And my heart feels like it’s just been ripped out and stomped on,’ Carter said at the time.
The Nylah’s murder trial only lasted two days. When the suspect took the stand, she said killing her best friend it was something that she would forever regret.
‘She was like a sister to me,’ she testified.
Prosecutor Jim Hudson said during his closing statement: ‘The case was graphic, disturbing and unsettling. Because of the decisions she made, a family now lives without a daughter.
‘We ask that you send a message to her that these acts have consequences.’
He continued: ‘There is no arguing what her intent was. When she came outside with the knife she was still in control. But not even her friend could stop her. She was only following through with what she had threatened twice.’
A mother and her teenage son were fatally stabbed, strangled and bludgeoned with a gym weight in their Bronx apartment by a fiend who callously threw torn-up money on the woman’s body before fleeing, sources told The Post.
Marisol Ortiz, 51, of Belmont, and her youngest son, Alanche del Orbe, who was a day away from turning 15, were found dead at 3:38 p.m. Sunday in their East 185th Street apartment and police were searching into the late-night hours for the woman’s ex-con boyfriend, sources said.
The crime was incredibly vicious. While both had been bashed with a heavy weight, the mother was also stabbed in the head and the boy strangled, according to law enforcement sources.
Ortiz’s 22-year-old daughter discovered the bloody bodies.
“I just heard the daughter screaming,” an upstairs neighbor, Iris Rosa, 58, told The Post. “I didn’t hear no words. It was just ‘Ahhhhh!’ And then nothing.”
The daughter, whose name was not released, had rushed home after the mom’s colleagues called to say she hadn’t been to work Sunday.
Ortiz, a business owner, had not shown up in the morning to open her store, and her distraught daughter called police.
“She was on the sidewalk, on the phone,” Rosa said. “She was crying.”
When cops arrived, they found the mother of four dead on the floor in one room and the boy, who may have been attacked as he slept, dead on a bed in another.
A bloody knife was found near the teen. Cops believe the killer left an exercise weight by each body after using them to bludgeon their heads, according to a law enforcement source.
A source also said cops found torn money on the mom’s body, but could give no more details.
Police did not immediately release the name of the boyfriend, who sources said has a prison record for assault.
Cops could not say exactly when the murders happened, but a neighbor, Angel Cabrera, told NBC News that he heard screaming at 1 or 2 a.m., but had thought it was from a party.
Haydee Leonardo, del Orbe’s grieving cousin, told The Post outside the apartment Sunday night, “Tomorrow is his birthday.”
The youngster’s Facebook page shows him to have been a Yankees fan who enjoyed rap music and playing baseball with his father.
Four-year-old Helena Flores was autistic, so her caring parents made sure to child-proof their home.
The one thing they overlooked — an open window high enough that it seemed out of reach — was deadly to the Bronx toddler.
Just before 5 p.m. Saturday, Helena climbed up to the window, which was cracked open two inches so her bedroom wouldn’t get too hot.
Somehow, Helena opened it further — and fell from her fourth-floor apartment to the pavement below.
On Sunday, Helena’s parents had planned a Peppa Pig-themed birthday party in the family’s home on E. 140th St. near Cypress Ave. in Mott Haven. Their daughter turned four years old last Tuesday.
Instead, they spent the day grieving.
“She was loved and was safe. My whole home is childproofed because Helena’s autistic,” said Hilda Flores, the girl’s mother. “We just overlooked one small detail.”
Flores said the tiny kids’ bedroom contains two radiators — so she often left the window open to keep the space from getting too hot.
Flores said she was asleep when her daughter fell, and that her sister and niece were on babysitting duty.
“I am currently experiencing back pain, I am currently on muscle relaxers trying to deal with the pain,” said Flores. “I went to take a nap and I woke up when my sister ran in the room and asked if Helena was with me.”
Flores said she and her sister frantically searched the tiny apartment and quickly discovered the bedroom window was wide open and Helena’s body was sprawled below.
“We was told she had died on impact,” said Flores. “Although no amount of words could console my family and I, knowing she didn’t suffer gives an inch of peace.”
Flores said the family cut a cake on Helena’s birthday Tuesday. She was proud that Helena blew out her candles unassisted.
“When you have an autistic child, things like that are big,” she said.
Flores said her husband went to Home Depot on Sunday afternoon to get childproofing equipment for the window from which Helena fell.
“We were one of those parents that would say, ‘No, not me. Not my kid,’” said Flores. “We were extra careful in our household. One mistake changed all of this in a split second.”
The family was waiting to hear from the hospital to begin arranging Helena’s funeral .
“Helena was very smart, very bright,” Flores said. “She had high functioning autism, but she was a bright, bright little girl. She was very athletic, very into gymnastics. She was always climbing and jumping.”
Helena had one sister and three brothers, Flores said.
“It was truly a small mistake that caused a tragedy, a mistake that anyone could have overlooked,” said Flores. “Hold onto your children because accidents like this can happen to anyone at any moment.”
One of the three attackers wanted in the fatal stabbing of a Bronx teen has been arrested, police said Monday.
Jason Ramirez, 20, was busted Friday for the slaying of Pernell Pompey, 17.
Pompey was jumped by three men and stabbed at E. 193rd St. and Decatur Ave. in Fordham Manor, two blocks from his home, about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday in what police believe may have been a robbery attempt.
He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital but could not be saved.
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. 9Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man
Like the verse said that the man is not created for the woman but the woman is created for the man. Now i went into the Bible and this a mandate from God himself . But the Christians and the liberals will be the first one to scream out girl power on the news and any where you can think of.
When a man is in trouble where the heck is she, I tell you where she is she is some where laughing it up and building case why she should not help the blackman. You can see on the news what is going on in the black community killing her kids ,aborting her kids, prostituting there kids and there is a Bible verse connected to that last statement
Leviticus 19:29 New King James Version (NJV)
29 ‘Do not prostitute your daughter, to cause her to be a harlot, lest the land fall into harlotry, and the land become full of wickedness.
This what prostituting your children looks like and you say the woman in general cares about anything with out the man she does not. This woman is out of control in this country what if she is the victim of something no matter how long she will get the love from the public and even the man’s own family will turn on him. A woman who is in violation of so many laws and statues of God it is un heard off to check this woman.
i see woman coming from church all the time holding that bible when i know damn well she does not care about nothing that is in that book. If she did you will act like good man is a gift not test him for like forever and then throw him away.
The woman was a gift from the most high for the man but the woman is no where what she used to be. She is now more like eggs frying on your brain. I compare a woman to what was expected in the bible. I am 46 years old you know how many i come across that follow the basic laws in the Bible,None!!!!
And since she does not know how to follow the basic laws in the bible i do not even try to get in a relationship with that girl. She is run threw a battery of test by the man God created first who the woman was created for not the other way around and she fails all the time.
So gentlemen , who she does not like by the way take your pick of the Bible braking whore and you have alot of them. And you know how whores are right !!!she has all the traits
This woman is overly sexed and out of control in all she does and then turns what she is against you and thanks to America and there liberal ways and there public lynching of black men that only tries to meet her demands is mind boggling to say the lest.
Men cannot be blamed of being a gentle and meeting all her wants , It takes two to tangle and both parties need to be blamed not just the man
A 17-year-old boy fatally shot by a Chicago police officer Saturday night on the West Side died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to an autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The officer shot the boy after police tried to pull over the vehicle he was riding in, officials said.
The teen, identified by authorities as Michael Elam, was initially taken to an area hospital after the shooting in critical condition. But on Sunday morning, a spokesman for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, the city agency that investigates police-involved shootings, said the teen has since died.
Two weapons were confiscated at the scene, according to Chicago police, and no officers were hurt.
The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. near 21st Street and Keeler Avenue in the North Lawndale community after Ogden District tactical officers tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, police said.
As officers followed the vehicle, they saw it hit a parked vehicle and a curb before coming to a stop, police said.
The teen passenger exited the vehicle before “an armed confrontation ensued,” prompting one officer to shoot the teen, police said. The COPA spokesman said the suspect was shot by the officer when he tried to flee as police pursued him on foot.
As required by Chicago Police Department policy after police-involved shootings, that officer will be placed on desk duty for 30 days.
As a matter of routine, COPA will conduct an investigation into whether Police Department protocol was followed during the shooting.
The New Voices Fund has been working to level the playing field for women entrepreneurs of color. Through several partnerships, the fund has provided women with access to capital and other resources needed to succeed in the realm of entrepreneurship. One of the latest organizations to team up with the fund to create more opportunities for women of color business owners is MVMT50, Black Enterprise reported.
MVMT50 —a collective of Black leaders who are focused on increasing cultural representation in the innovation and technology spaces—has joined forces with SheaMoisture and the New Voices Foundation to host a pitch competition for Black women, the news outlet writes. The competition—dubbed PITCH BLACK—was created as an avenue to address the obstacles that Black women face when trying to become entrepreneurs, including the lack of access to capital. The competition winners will receive up to $100,000.
“We created the New Voices Foundation to provide wrap-around services and ensure that we could meet our entrepreneurs where they are on their individual journeys, whether they need capital or other critical resources such as access or expertise,” Richelieu Dennis, Founder, New Voices Fund, said in a statement. “As we continue to invest in black women, I’m thrilled that we are able to do so via this impactful experience with MVMT50 and Pitch Black. Only through collective efforts will we truly begin to level the field.”
The pitch competition is slated to take place at the University of Texas at Austin on March 9.
There has been a push to support Black women founders. Last year Arlan Hamilton, founder of the venture capitalist firm Backstage Capital, announced that the company would invest $36 million in the entrepreneurial endeavors of African American women.
Gucci has announced plans to boost cultural diversity and awareness within its company after it received backlash for one of its clothing items resembling blackface caricatures.
The luxury brand released a statement on social media Friday sharing its first set of initiatives to address the incident in what it says is the start of a “long-term plan of actions.”
“We accept full accountability for this incident, which has exposed shortfalls in our ongoing strategic approach to embedding diversity and inclusion in both our organization and in our activities,” Marco Bizzarri, Gucci president and CEO, said in the statement.
The NFL and Kaepernick’s attorneys released a statement on Friday that read, “For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with representatives of the NFL. As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement so there will be no further comment by any party.”
While the details of the settlement are not known, Yahoo Sports reports they were “told on prior occasions that Kaepernick and Reid would only settle the complaint if a lucrative financial agreement was reached between the players and the NFL.”
Kaepernick and Reid case, which was filed in October of 2017, alleged that the NFL teams were in violation of the anti-collusion clause of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Kaepernick’s attorney claimed he was not signed because the NFL and the owners, “colluded to deprive Mr. Kaepernick of employment rights in retaliation for Mr. Kaepernick’s leadership and advocacy for equality and social justice and his bringing awareness to peculiar institutions still undermining racial equality in the United States.”
ESPN reports that there was about to hearing on the case, which would have been “semi-public” and “could have exposed inner workings of league business, along with the details of depositions attorneys have taken with high-level executives and in some owners.” Therefore, it sounds like it was in the NFL’s best interest to settle.
Back in August TMZ reported an arbitrator threw out the NFL’s motion to dismiss Colin Kaepernick’s collusion lawsuit, which means there would have been a trial and NFL owners will have to testify under oath.
TMZ reports, “The NFL had filed legal docs alleging Kaepernick’s legal argument — that NFL owners conspired to keep him out of the league — was baseless and without evidence. The arbitrator disagreed, concluding there was sufficient evidence present in the former QB’s legal docs to allow his case to go forward.”
Also, it was possible Trump would have been subpoenaed. As we reported back in June, Kaepernick filed subpoenas for Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and other officials to talk about their “political involvement” with the NFL. The administration would also have to admit to the pressure they allegedly put on the league to stop players from kneeling in peaceful protests. However, lawyers for Trump have argued that the president is immune from prosecution.
Nonetheless, congrats to Kaepernick and Reid for staying in the fight and winning against a massive entity.
At a later news conference, Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman confirmed Martin had killed five people at the Henry Pratt Company, a 118-year-old company that makes water valves. The warehouse employs about 200 people, but it wasn’t clear how many were inside at the time, Ziman said.
The horrific ordeal lasted about an hour and 35 minutes from the time numerous people called 911 to report a shooter.
One officer was shot outside the warehouse and another near the entrance as soon as they arrived at the scene, Ziman said. Three additional officers were wounded as they ran into the building.
No shots were fired for the next 90 minutes as scores of officers swarmed the warehouse and tried to find the shooter.
“We had two very different missions: One was for life saving, and one was for finding the offender,” Ziman said.
A SWAT team eventually located Martin, who fired his Smith and Wesson handgun at them, Ziman said. They returned fire, killing him.
Authorities then found five employees dead, and another with a nonfatal wound. Their identities have not been released. Ziman said they were giving family members time to contact one another.
“My heart goes out to the victims and their family members who simply went to work today like any other day,” she said.
The five officers who were shot are expected to survive as well. One had undergone surgery, and another was going under the knife late Friday, Ziman said.
A search of Martin’s Aurora home didn’t turn up anything suspicious, Ziman said.
“This is a sad day for the city of Aurora. We must never forget those innocent people who were senselessly, senselessly gunned down,” said Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin. “… Our hearts go out to the victims in this horrific tragedy.”

Emergency crews originally responded to “multiple calls” of an active shooter at 641 Archer Ave. at 1:28 p.m., Ziman said.
The officers were immediately fired upon as they entered they 29,000-square-foot warehouse, she said.
“There is an active shooter near Highland and Archer,” the city tweeted Friday afternoon. “Aurora Police are on the scene.”
“This is an ongoing active scene,” police tweeted.
A huge police and fire department presence could be seen outside the business. SWAT teams surrounded the complex. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the FBI were also at the scene.
John Probst, who identified himself as a worker at Henry Pratt, told ABC7 the gunman worked “in assembly” at the company for about 15 years and came to work Friday like any other day. He said 30 people were in the building at the time of the shooting.
He said he saw Martin holding a pistol with a laser scope before he started firing randomly. After the shooting started, he and other workers ran out of the back of the building, and some took refuge in nearby homes.

The shooter was “apprehended” around 3 p.m., the city tweeted. Ziman later said he was killed by police.
The Basketball Africa League will be the first time the NBA collaborates to operate a league outside of North America.
The NBA announced Saturday it is helping launch a professional basketball league in Africa.
The new league will be called the Basketball Africa League, or BAL, according to the joint announcement from the NBA and FIBA, basketball’s international governing body. The BAL will feature 12 teams representing several countries across the African continent, including Nigeria, Angola, Senegal, Tunisia, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, South Africa and Rwanda, the NBA’s press release stated.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis made the joint announcement at the NBA All-Star 2019 Africa luncheon in North Carolina.
“The implementation of this league is also vital to our young up-and-coming players in Africa as it gives them something to take aim at: they can look at becoming players who can play and evolve in these competitions, right on their continent,” said Alphonse Bilé, FIBA Africa executive director, according to the release.
The BAL will be the first time the NBA collaborates to operate a league outside of North America, the organization stated.
The NBA and FIBA also announced plans to hold qualification tournaments this year to determine the 12 teams, which are slated to officially begin play next January.
Many people celebrated the news of the new league on Twitter Saturday.
A stunning 22 percent of inmates in the federal prison population are immigrants who have either already been deemed to be in the country illegally or who the government is looking to put in deportation proceedings, the administration said Tuesday.
President Trump requested the numbers as part of his initial immigration executive orders.
The 22 percent is much higher than the population of foreign-born in the U.S. as a whole, which is about 13.5 percent.
All told, the government counted more than 42,000 aliens in federal prisons as of June 24.
About 47 percent already face final deportation orders, making them illegal immigrants, and 3 percent are currently in immigration courts facing deportation proceedings.
Almost all of the rest are being probed by federal agents looking to deport them.
Immigrants who commit serious crimes, even if they once had legal status, can have that status revoked and can be subject to deportation, which explains the high number of cases where an alien is still being probed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The U.S. Marshal Service, meanwhile, is holding about 12,000 “self-reporting” aliens, and almost all of them have already been ordered deported.
Government officials said they’re still working to try to collect information on the foreign-born population in state and local prisons and jails.
Trump aims to tap over $6.5 billion using techniques that are sure to invite legal challenges.
President Donald Trump on Friday declared a state of emergency on the southern border and immediately directed $8 billion to construct or repair as many as 234 miles of a border barrier.
The move — which Trump acknowledged is sure to invite vigorous legal challenges from activists and government officials — comes after Trump failed to get the $5.7 billion he was seeking from lawmakers. Instead, Trump agreed to sign a congressional funding deal that included just $1.375 for border security, an amount he claimed as a victory but said was still “not enough.”
In addition to the funds Congress has appropriated, the White House will seek to redirect $3.6 billion from a military construction fund, $600 million from a Treasury Department drug forfeiture fund and $2.5 billion from a Pentagon drug prevention program, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney told reporters Friday.
From the White House’s Rose Garden Friday, Trump said he had to make the move because there was “an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, all types of criminals and gangs.”
And he lambasted congressional leaders for failing to get him the money he wanted, taking a thinly veiled shot at recently retired House Speaker Paul Ryan, saying people in Congress “should have stepped up.”
“It would have been easy,” Trump said over the course of nearly an hour of remarks followed by a question and answer session. “Not that easy, but it would have been a lot easier. Some people didn’t step up. We are stepping up now.”
The national emergency declaration is being used to tap the largest pot of money — the $3.6 billion earmarked for military construction. The White House is relying on other legal authorities to justify redirections of the other financial resources.
“It’s an all-of-the-above approach,” said a person close to the White House. “He always knew Congress was never going to give him the money he needed.”
But even as Trump made the border announcement on Friday, he focused much of his remarks on other areas he considers clear victories — trade negotiations, the economy and his efforts to denuclearize North Korea. Before even officially announcing the anticipated declaration, Trump took a winding path through the other topics for about 15 minutes.
Still, the border wall strategy is sure to appease his conservative base, which has been clamoring from Trump to win the border security funding he has vowed to obtain.
As expected, congressional Democrats announced they would immediately challenge the move on an array of fronts.
“The President’s actions clearly violate the Congress’s exclusive power of the purse, which our Founders enshrined in the Constitution,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement. “The Congress will defend our constitutional authorities in the Congress, in the Courts, and in the public, using every remedy available.”
The Democratic House is likely to pass a resolution of disapproval to block Trump’s move, which can be brought to the Senate floor and passed by a simple majority under procedural rules. If four Senate Republicans join all Democrats, the measure would be sent to Trump, who would be forced to issue a veto.
Lawmakers are also likely to launch a legal challenge to try and block the move.
The president on Friday said he was aware his emergency declaration will face a court fight, predicting that the matter could go all the way to the Supreme Court. But he forecast ultimate victory, citing the legal battle his administration waged over a travel ban for people from certain Muslim-majority countries. The administration was eventually able to get a third version through the courts after two other attempts were blocked.
“We will then be sued,” Trump said Friday. “And we will possibly get a bad ruling, and then we will get another bad ruling, and then we will end up in the Supreme Court and hopefully we will get a fair shake and win in the Supreme Court, just like the ban.
While Trump’s conservative base is largely supportive of Trump’s emergency declaration, numerous Republicans on Capitol Hill have been privately and publicly urging Trump to avoid such a step, fearful that use of such powers could propel a future Democratic president to take the same step on climate change or gun violence.
Even inside the White House, several aides have worried that a national emergency declaration would set a dangerous precedent — but Mulvaney pushed back against that notion.
“It actually creates zero precedent,” Mulvaney insisted on Friday in a call with reporters. “This is authority given to the president under law already.”
The funds Trump will get from Congress are part of a $328 billion spending billthat lawmakers swiftly passed Thursday to avoid a federal government shutdown before a midnight Friday deadline. The package’s $1.375 billion for border security will go towards 55 miles of physical barrier along the southern border in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
White House staffers held a conference call with supporters earlier Friday, telling them construction will begin in Texas and not California, where Trump will likely face a lawsuit from Democratic state leaders, according to someone familiar with the call.
A senior administration official told reporters that its ultimate goal is to repair or build barriers along at least 234 miles of the border.
“We are in the process to make sure that we can make those dollars go as far as they possibly can,” the official said. “And we expect that they will be able to go farther than 234 miles.”
Since 1976, presidents have declared 58 national emergencies. One was declared during the the Iraq war in 1990, and another was invoked after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
Trump plans to travel to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida later on Friday.
Roland J. Bourgeois Jr. was sentenced to 10 years in prison, as well as five years of supervised release in the racially-motivated shooting.
BREANNA EDWARDS Feb, 15, 2019
Roland J. Bourgeois Jr., 55, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday for shooting three young Black men who were trying to evacuate New Orleans following the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Bourgeois targeted the three young men due to their race after they came into the neighborhood where he lived. The men had gone into the neighborhood to reach a ferry landing that state and federal agencies were using to evacuate victims when Bourgeois shot them.
All of the men were injured in the shooting, with one of the men being struck in the neck and back, and the other two being hit in the arms, back and legs, the New York Times reports.
Court documents detailed that Bourgeois and other white men in the neighborhood tried to prevent “outsiders” from entering Algiers Point, a suburb which borders the Mississippi River, using downed trees to block off the streets near their homes and patrolling the streets with guns.
The three Black men passed a barricade on their way to the ferry and Bourgeois fired his weapon at them. The men ran away, and Bourgeois boasted that he had “got one,” using a racial slur to describe the man, and promised to kill him.
Bourgeois also showed off a bloodied baseball cap that had fallen off of one of the men’s heads.
Bourgeois later told a Black neighbor who pleaded with him to not shoot her family that “anything coming up this street darker than a brown paper bag is getting shot,” according to the Times-Picayune.
When he was initially indicted, he claimed that he thought the men were looting, before later admitting that that was not the case.
Bourgeois was originally charged in 2010 with conspiracy, civil rights violations, obstruction of justice, making false statements and firearms violations, however, his case was delayed all these years as his physical and mental competency to stand trial was evaluated. He was evaluated six times since 2010, the Times notes and was finally declared competent in 2018.
In October 2018, he pleaded guilty to interference with rights and use of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence.
He was sentenced to five years in prison for each count, and will also serve five years of supervised release.
Women incarcerated in a San Francisco jail say they were forced to strip naked in front of male deputies, in violation of state law, according to complaints released by the San Francisco public defender’s office.
In California, strip searches of inmates must be conducted in an area with privacy, and with no one of the opposite sex within sight.
Jeff Adachi, San Francisco’s public defender, filed a formal complaint with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department in January after hearing reports from women about the searches.
His office collected the stories of 16 women who said they experienced inappropriate strip searches inside County Jail No. 2, which is the only jail in San Francisco city that houses women. About 90 percent of the women held there have yet to be convicted of a crime, Adachi said.
“While strip searches are allowed in a jail or prison setting, they can’t be arbitrarily carried out or carried out in a way that is unreasonable, without any basis,” he told HuffPost. “Based on the reports that we were receiving, the grounds for the strip searches were questionable and the way they were being performed ― with male guards in eyeshot and other inappropriate conduct by the deputies ― raised some red flags for us.”
At least 12 women reported that they were strip-searched in locations where they were visible to male deputies. Most of them asked to withhold their names from the formal complaint due to fear of retaliation.
One woman described how she was asked to get naked, squat, cough and lift up both breasts within eyesight of several male guards and other female inmates. She reported making eye contact with a male deputy during the search. Afterward, she told a lawyer, the deputy informed her and other inmates that he didn’t have a girlfriend and that he found some of them attractive.
Another woman reported that she was searched next to a toilet containing unflushed blood, urine and feces. She worried that being strip-searched near an open door allowed for the jail cameras to film her naked body.
“Our concern is that the sheriff’s department does not appear to be following a consistent protocol in conducting these strip searches,” Adachi said. “Our clients felt like their privacy, although limited because they are in custody, was being violated.”
Many women said they found the strip searches distressing, using words such as “especially degrading,” “humiliating,” “violating” and “unusual.”
San Francisco Sheriff Vicki Hennessy has launched an investigation into the allegations.
Women in jail are the fastest-growing segment of America’s incarcerated population. They are overwhelmingly poor and low-income, and have high rates of trauma, mental and physical illness and histories of substance abuse, according to a 2016 report.
Though it reportedly appears the girl actively participated in the sex acts, she would have been unable to give legal consent at 14
Attorney Michael Avenatti on Thursday claimed he has given a videotape to prosecutors that he said shows musician R. Kelly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
The high-profile attorney said in a statement that he recently recovered a previously undisclosed VHS tape of the singer, whose given name is Robert Kelly, engaging in multiple sexual assaults of the girl.
“The tape, which is clear, is approximately 45 minutes in length and has never previously been publicly disclosed or, until recently, provided to law enforcement,” Avenatti said in his statement.
Avenatti told HuffPost that the tape was recorded in Chicago in the late 1990s, when Kelly would have been in his late 20s or early 30s. The timing of the sexual acts allegedly seen in the video falls within the relevant Illinois statute of limitations, he said in his statement.
CNN, which viewed the video, said the tape appears to show Kelly engaged in multiple sex acts with a girl who repeatedly refers to what she calls her “14-year-old” body parts. CNN’s description of the video suggests the girl appeared to be actively participating in the sexual acts.
Avenatti provided additional details about the video’s alleged content in a statement later on Thursday, claiming that Kelly can be seen engaging in oral, anal and vaginal sex with the girl in two different rooms on two different days.
“Mr. Kelly and the young victim are both clearly visible throughout the tape as is an identifying mole on the mid to low back of Mr. Kelly on his left side,” Avenatti wrote. “Critically, Mr. Kelly and the victim also verbally refer to the girl as only being 14 on multiple occasions on the video,” he added.
Kelly’s attorney Steve Greenberg said in a statement that he wasn’t aware of Avenatti’s allegations until Thursday.
“I have not been contacted by anyone connected with law enforcement, nor has R Kelly,” Greenberg said in his statement. “Mr. Kelly denies that he has engaged in any illegal conduct, of any kind whatsoever.”
Avenatti is representing three individuals in connection with sexual abuse allegations against Kelly, including victims and witnesses, he told HuffPost. He said he gave the tape to Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.A representative for the prosecutor’s office told HuffPost that they cannot confirm or deny an investigation.
The description of the tape sounds similar to a video that surfaced in 2002, which reportedly showed Kelly sexually assaulting an underage girl. The 2002 video allegedly showed Kelly urinating on the girl, as does, according to CNN, the tape Avenatti turned over to prosecutors. Kelly was acquitted of charges related to the 2002 incident six years later.
In 2017, BuzzFeed News published an explosive report alleging that Kelly operated an abusive sex cult. The shocking accusations of abuse and sexual assault made headlines again recently with the release of the Lifetime docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly,” which interviewed several women who say they were abused by the musician.
This story has been updated with Greenberg’s comments and additional comments from Avenatti.
Black gangsters and there attempted to lead the black nation against the white majority is one of the insane ploys to gain freedom for the black nation i’ve ever heard of.
Black people have been in this country for four hundred years and we had many great black leaders like Malcom x, Martin Luther King and many more. We as a black nation threw our time in America did many great things in this country . We created and invented many things that we use today. We have influence the world on how to gain freedom for there nation in places like China to Israel . As we continue our plight to get equal rights in this country with white people there has been a shift of power that was once reserved for personal learned people of our race to people that are not so professional and they think the only way to gain our freedom is to make war with whites here in America.
These two mind set are so different from each other on one hand there is progress on other hand is nothing but the total destruction of the black race here in America as we know it. Black people seem to have forgotten that the main reason we gain our freedom from segregation was not of our own doing. But the political heat that was produced by our none violence protest of segregation to a inhuman race that was treating there former slaves like crap. The only reason we got our freedom was because of the invention called the T.V. . Brothers and sisters have no idea what the T.v. did for our race. You know why i know that? it’s because that same invention that gave us our freedom is spiraling our people back into what we where along with the internet.
This two mediums is making our people into what white people always said we where and that is savages. Along with rap music and Hip-Hop implanting crazy idea’s in our younger generation’s minds. Now iam not saying that racist whites do not have a play in this mind control but for money and fame a people would do just about anything to get out of the hood including play any thing that record labels wants them to play.
When i was young rap music was talking about what the inner cities was like and how black people was trying to get by in those hoods. Now you have rap artist pointing guns and talking about killing other black people and since then the rate of black on black crime has sky rocketed
First it was the music then they start imitating these brothers on stage to the way they dressed at first then brandishing guns like they see on the rap video’s . Don’t even get me started on the movies in Hollywood and the independent movies black people make . It came to the point where if you did not have a gun that black man was some kind of mark, a term that originated from assassins that they saw on the big screen.
Like i said in one of my post that the black nation at this time is lead by the black woman do to the the fact the section 8 and welfare systematical have thrown the black man out of the house from raising there kids. Under the female rule for about 30 years produced what you see to day.
During the sixties and fifties our men where men and they was lead by men because the father or some male role model was in the house handling the responsibilities of raising those kids. And i also said removing the father out of the house is a form of black magic.
Now these brothers who once imitated rappers on stage in almost ever way have alienated the professional man who lead us out of segregation and slavery to the point where as soon as he gets older enough he wants out and goes to college or the military to get out and alot of the times he don’t go back and for good reason!!!!! And now the Thugs of our people (Soldiers) have taken over the hood. And we have been murdering ourselves every since. Because of the frustrations of the lack of opportunities and chances in life. I made note that the lack of opportunities and the chances in life was just as high as it is now as it was in the forties, fifties, and sixties and racism was alot worse then now. We are killing each other in record numbers and that did not happen back in segregation . So why are this happening?
I believe the black race is now ruled by the black woman and her fatherless kids. That is preaching death to the white man with a army that only has a population rate of 14% of the united states while whites populate 64% of the United states with all the technology and weapons at his finger tips. It’s a foolish plan by an ill informed people that can’t see five years into there own future.
Hate never works and never will work in this nation towards any race . And dum idea’s like the nation of Islam trying to convince you that the white man is going to give you five states for black people to take over. A plan by the way they will never accomplish or even attempt to do.
The Nation of Islam in one of there books called the massage to the black man tried to pitch this idea to black people during the sixties when that book was first wrote and pocketed all the money. The Nation of Islam said if every black man and woman who is able to donate 5 dollars a month we can purchase five states from America where black people can run there own state never happened. And now Farrakhan just brought it up not to long ago, again!!!! to a whole new generation that don’t know what happened the first time they tried this in the sixties.
I can say this for the Nation of Islam they have the right idea but true freedom lies not in the borders of America. This not only a fact is a Biblical one. That is the only true move that so called black people make to gain there independence from the so called white man. The percentage living in peace also sky rockets as well for you and your children after you.
All this hating the white man for this and that is doing nothing for our people but giving more nations fuel to hate us more then ever before . This hate strategy comes from the inner cities and there fatherless kids. With this hate of white people there only strategy to relieve themselves from there hate of the world and the white man is to kill themselves off for pennies. Its sad i must say because the only way out for our people is not mexico and it is not Canada it is getting into talks with our brothers and sisters in Africa as well as the one’s that where spread threw out the world in these European nations to get together. We have the means and that is the internet the question is do we have the will.
You want freedom you must cut yourselves off from the idea of war with white people all is its going to do is get African Americans wiped off the American Map. We as a people need to get in touch with our brothers over seas. There is no solution for black people here in America. Peace war it does not matter we will always be subjugated by white people as long as we as a nation stay in this country. The first step is to get intouch with our brothers and sisters over seas and start from there.
The destruction of the Confederate statues across america can and is met with alot of controversy around this country. I do believe that Racism need to be abolished and every symbol of racism need not to show its face anywhere in a free nation. You can’t call America a free nation if you continue to subjugate the minority population of that nation, You can’t call your nation free when the law tilts in the favor of one group of people over the other group of people. You can’t call your nation a free nation if you have Confederate statue blanketed in every city and town that you visit.
These confederates represent the enslavement and killing and the down right brain washing of another nation. Countless hangings of innocent people that did nothing to the southern man but be born. The unbelievable profit that the southern white’s generated from free laber that these so called black people provided while the people that profited just sat on the porch of the homes andf was paid unheard of amount of money for basically doing nothing. The countless death and rapes of the black woman and new reports that came out lately that the black man was also sexually accosted as well. I can go on and on why these statues need to be taken down.It was a dark area of the united states that hopefully most black and white American’s wish to forget. That is why most if not all of these statues are being taking down. But there are people out there will see this is some kind of ploy to destroy white nationalism.
In my opinion these statues and monuments should not have been put up in the first place. These monuments should have never seen the light of day because these southern soldiers and general lost the civil war. Its like the North and the South both got messages that they won the war when it was the North that won the war. You have more confederate statues up around the United States then you have Union Soldiers that are in the United State.
Statues are only given to the victor of the the war not the loser. But still these statues are every where in every city and county and most of us just walk right past them and don’t realize who or what a certain statue that they are looking at represents. I was in Atlanta and i was in a park and being absorbent that i am i walk up to one of these statue and sure enough there it was a confederate soldier just standing there with the expression of pride in its face. Then i read the message and i walked away.
Sure ever person every nation deserves a culture even the people of the old south. But the old south was bloody and evil to it’s core. What i would say for these statues is that even these men who lived in the south at that time was fighting for something they knew all there lives and could not be blamed for fighting for something like keeping there slaves and keeping there culture because it was all there knew since birth. The normal man should no the difference between right and wrong But that is a little difficult if your parents talked bad about black people . Your friend talked bad about black people , Basically your whole world talked bad about black people that did not know how to read and write because they was not allowed to and at that time if you was around most slaves at that time they probably did not smell so good. I am not giving these southern people a pass on common sense by no means!!!!
What they should do with these statues are to create a confederate museum . I do not believe in destroying no form of history at all even this evil history of our great nation. If you destroy these monuments you will in time repeat history. In fact !! I would not be surprise if that was not the plan in the first place. If you destroy these statues it’s like giving permision to repeat the people in history mistake of enslaving black people.
To destroy history is a mistake and that history are in books for a reason not for us to make the same mistake twice . That is the purpose of recording history. But if you destroy history history will repeat it’s self.
“History shows that you are on the wrong side,” state Sen. Lena Taylor, who is black, said Wednesday on the Senate floor, according to CBS 58 News.
Kaepernick, the former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, is originally from Milwaukee. In 2016, he began kneeling during the national anthems before NFL games as a peaceful protest against police brutality and racial inequality in the U.S.
While Kaepernick is not currently signed with any NFL team, his activism has inspired more NFL players to kneel in silent protest, to the ire of President Donald Trump and many conservative Republicans.
Wisconsin lawmakers have been debating the issue since Tuesday, when the state’s Republican Assembly members erased Kaepernick’s name from a list of two dozen black Wisconsin natives whom the state would formally honor that month.
Wisconsin’s black legislators created the list of honorees for Black History Month. None of the state’s GOP Assembly members are African-American.
Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday that Republicans removed Kaepernick’s name because he was a controversial figure, according to The Associated Press.
On Wednesday, the state Senate, also controlled by Republicans, voted on the measure. The only black senators in the state, Democratics Taylor and La Tonya Johnson, voted against the measure because it lacked Kaepernick’s name.
State Sen. Jon Erpanbach, a white Democrat, said that the Black History Month vote this year was “one of the uglier” issues they have voted on, according to the Sentinel.
“There is such a thing as white privilege, and we’re looking at it right now. We’re staring it in the face,” the paper reported him as saying.
No Republican spoke during the debate over the resolution on Wednesday, according to multiple news outlets.
“Colin Kaepernick showed courage,” she continued. “Although he stood for inequality and injustice everywhere in this nation and police brutality that is real in this nation, he’s from a place that is the worst in the nation to be a black American.”
Count Lady Gaga in the Cardi B camp after the rapper drew backlash over her Grammy win.
Both of them walked away with trophies at the 61st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night; Cardi B even made history, becoming the first solo woman to win Best Rap Album ― but only the hip-hop superstar had to defend her win for some reason after some online critics labeled her undeserving.
Gaga apparently caught wind of the controversy and showed her support for the rapper on Tuesday with a heartfelt post, praising her “brave” fellow Grammy winner.
“It is so hard to be a woman in this industry. What it takes, how hard we work through the disrespectful challenges, just to make art,” the “A Star Is Born” actress wrote. “I love you Cardi. You deserve your awards. Let’s celebrate her fight. Lift her up & honor her. She is brave.”
After years of their fans clamoring for the two music icons to join forces, they met at the awards show and shared a sweet moment together.
Gaga posted a silly video of herself celebrating her Grammy and BAFTA wins by dancing backstage to Cardi B’s Grammy-nominated hit “I l Like It” off her album “Invasion of Privacy,” which refers to the pop star by name.
“You know what? It’s not my style for people to put other people down to uplift somebody else. That’s not my style, and that’s not what I’m with, and I don’t support that. However, I’ve been taking a lot of shit today,” she says in the video. “I’m seeing a lot of bullshit today, and I saw a lot of shit last night, and I’m sick of this shit. I work hard for my motherfucking album.”
She beat out fellow nominees Nipsey Hussle, Pusha T, Travis Scott and the late Mac Miller for the prestigious award.
Fortunately, Gaga wasn’t the only one to show Cardi some love over the weekend, with Chance the Rapper, who is featured on “Invasion of Privacy,” calling her win “overly deserved.”
“It would be inconceivable not to honor u last night,” he wrote in the comments of a now-deleted post. “Straight up bask in it YOU deserve it. Its a feeling very few will ever know, but YOU do.”
Six police officers in Vallejo, California, are on administrative leave pending an investigation after they fatally shot a man moments after he woke up in the driver’s seat of his car in a Taco Bell drive-thru.
The Vallejo Police Department and Solano County District Attorney’s Office say they have launched a “thorough and in-depth” investigation into the Saturday night shooting.
Police say they were called to the scene ― around 30 minutes northeast of San Francisco ― around 10:36 p.m. after an employee of the fast-food joint realized a customer behind the wheel of a silver Mercedes in the drive-thru lane was “slumped” over and motionless.
Two officers then arrived on the scene, according to the department. They reportedly noticed the driver was alone in the car with a handgun on his lap and called for backup. When two other officers arrived, the group attempted to open the door and quickly retrieve the gun, the department said, but the Mercedes was locked. Noticing the vehicle was also in drive, officers began positioning one patrol car at each bumper to prevent “erratic movement.”
With even more officers arriving on the scene, the man woke up. Police say they gave him “several commands to put his hands up,” but that he reached down toward his firearm instead. Six officers shot him “fearing for their safety,” the department said.
It was all over in about four seconds. The man was declared dead at the scene after lifesaving efforts failed.
Family members who spoke with The Guardian believed the officers’ response was unwarranted.
“There was no attempt to try to work out a peaceful solution,” Marc McCoy, Willie McCoy’s older brother, told the outlet. “The police’s job is to arrest people who are breaking the law ― not take the law into your own hands.”
“We’re never going to get over this,” he added.
“It’s a really big loss. Really, really unexpected,” a cousin, David Harrison, told the San Francisco Chronicle. “There’s a lot of grieving going on, trying to make sense of this thing.”
The six officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. Results of an autopsy, not yet available, will include how many times McCoy was hit by gunfire, as well as a toxicology report.
As The Guardian noted, the Taco Bell incident is just the latest in a series of recent violent confrontations between police and residents of the town. Last August, the Vallejo Police Department defended its officers’ actions after a video circulated online showing one officer straddling a man on the ground while a second officer strikes him with a flashlight.
According to the Chronicle, Saturday’s shooting was the third time in recent years that Bay Area police shot an armed man after trying to wake him up.

A substitute teacher in North Carolina is under fire after she reportedly told a class of elementary school students that assassinated civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. killed himself.
The teacher is also accused of telling the kids that if anyone who didn’t support Donald Trump was not a real Christian and told one child that the athletic gear he wore to school was “prison attire.”
It happened Friday during a music class at Rand Road Elementary in Garner. The sub, later identified as Elizabeth Temple, was apparently having a hard time getting the kids to settle down, according to parent Billy Byrd, whose son, Nathan, was singled out for his clothing.
Temple was supposed to show a video to the class but had a hard time getting the students, including Nathan, to settle down.
For some reason, Temple went on a different tack and told the student that King’s assassination was a complete fabrication.
“What book is she reading and obviously it’s not the right one, and for her to say this to a classroom full of kids, giving them that misinformed information is just bogus,” Billy Byrd told local station WTVD. “We can’t afford to have anybody in the school system that is teaching this damaging rhetoric to any kid ― white or black.”
In a Facebook post, Byrd said that instead of teaching music, the sub “constructed her own lesson plan that glorified President Trump and his love for God, country and all Americans.”
Byrd also said the teacher ”found the need to comment on my son’s appearance and the clothing that he was wearing” and “told my son and his fellow male peers of color that their clothing marked them for PRISON…..YES PRISON!”
VERY VERY IMPORTANT! Per “Black History Month” that is observed every Feb. of the year, for the 2019 Special Edition, USA Today decided to entitle their theme: “EXODUS: How Black Migrations Changed Our Nation” — Along with the cover also saying: “400 Years Ago: The African Arrival In America; Black Education Opportunities; Soul Food: USA’S 1st Fusion Cuisine” Now is it a surprise or a coincidence how the U.S. also mentions the 400 years in regards to Congress passing the H.R. 1242 bill signed into law as of Jan. 8th, 2018: “400 Years of African-American History Commission Act.” According to the bill, it establishes a commission that seeks to “develop and carry out activities throughout the United States to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans in the English colonies at Point Comfort, Virginia, in 1619.” But Who REALLY Arrived In 1619? Noting the prophecies spoken of in Brashyth/Genesis 15:13-14, Ma’ashah/Acts 7:6-7, and other prophetic books and verses (More Linked Below) — Exactly What Time Is It?! Because it’s also interesting how the USA Today also released a report for “Black History Month” on Botswana, “South Africa,” and the Kalahari Desert — intertwining them with “racial harmony.” Coupling this with the “EXODUS” reference, and knowing where the REAL Jerusalem Is (More Linked Below), what exactly are they trying to tell us?! When we also note other prophetic events such as the record U.S. government shutdown, locusts recorded in Saudi Arabia, polar vortex, near-record cold affecting much of the Midwest, apocalyptic activity occurring throughout much of the world, SIGNS noting the 400 years all throughout America (in places such as Kentucky and Hattiesburg, Mississippi), and even the 3 supermoons in a row that will take place as of Jan. Feb. and Mar. 2019 — What TIME Is It REALLY? Not to mention how one of these supermoons “coincidentally” occurred on Jan. 21st, 2019 — which was observed as “Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” and then the third and final one that will begin and commence the 400th Year. We have also noted other Prophetic SIGNS in the sky, such as: 1. Total Solar Eclipse — Occurred On Mon. Aug. 21st, 2017 2. Revelation 12 Sign — Fulfilled On Sat. Sept. 23rd, 2017 3. Full Moon On The 1st Of Abib — Occurring On Wed. Mar. 20th, 2019 With references to slavery, Exodus, 400 Years, and U.S. — Again, the question still remains: What TIME Is It REALLY? THE TRUTH REVEALED!!! PROPHETIC TIMES ARE HERE!!! EGYPT AKA AMERICA IS ABOUT TO MOURN!! AMERICA IS ABOUT TO BE JUDGED! BUT THE QUESTION IS, ARE YOU READY?! PLEASE SEEK YAHUAH AND HIS TRUE SON YAHUSHA — BECAUSE TIME’S ALMOST UP!!!!!
During the week of Feb. 5th-9th, 2019, a series of loud booms rocked downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach, California. These noises were said to be part of a U.S. Army training exercise involving aircraft and weapon simulations “in urban environments.”
According to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD): “Residents may hear sounds associated with the training… Each location selected enables special operations teams and flight crews to maintain maximum readiness and proficiency, validate equipment and exercise standard safety procedures. The training is essential to ensure service members are fully trained and prepared to defend our nation overseas.”
But does it strike you odd how this occurred with little-to-no prior knowledge from the residents? This isn’t the first time military drills have been conducted in California — As there have also been the Jade Helm drills hosted as of the summer 2015, along with several more.
Not only that, but during the exact same time, there have been series of Wells Fargo outages occurring throughout the entire nation. This “banking outage” has caused transactions, balances, and payroll deposits in online bankings and ATMs to vanish — Along with customers having issues using their credit and debit cards. U.K. banking giant Lloyds has also experienced the same issue during the exact same time.
Considering how all of this coincides with the record U.S. government shutdown, polar vortex and near-record cold in major cities such as Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit, record snow in major cities such as Seattle, and even reports of snow in Hawaii — What Is REALLY Going On?
Could this have anything to do with upcoming martial law? Is it a surprise or coincidence how the U.S. Army also outlines their plans for “civilian inmate” and internment resettlement operations as of 2005 and 2010, respectively?
What Is The REAL Reasoning Behind All This?
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — Police in Pennsylvania say a groom forced himself on a teenage waitress at his wedding reception and then was taken from the hall in handcuffs over a drunken brawl.
The Philadelphia Inquirer says Matthew Aimers, of Willingboro, New Jersey, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of indecent assault, indecent exposure, false imprisonment of a minor and related offenses.
An affidavit says the waitress had spurned Aimers’ advances during the reception. Police allege he followed her into a bathroom and sexually assaulted her.
He’s also charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after police say he fought officers responding to a brawl at the reception.
A worker alleged Aimers punched him after he tried to stop him from bringing alcohol outside.
His attorney Louis Busico says Aimers “completely maintains his innocence on all charges.”
Ive been telling people this for years but as usual one ear goes out the other with people , The enemies of God hang his decedents like they did jesus who suppose to be the son of God and at the same time God himself. And todays white supremacist is in fact the enemy of Jesus and God while telling you that Jesus is white and he was hanged on a cross. i know it is confusing but like the brother said get out of your churches and study the bible before it is to late. If i can find this out you can your churches work for white supremacy
Young cadets Queen Anunay and Kishia Clemencia stood out in their class at the D.C. Fire Academy as being among the few women in a male-dominated field. Of the department’s 1,550 members at the time, 35 were women.
Fast forward nearly three decades, and Anunay and Clemencia are the ones in charge.
The two women were appointed in recent months to battalion chief posts at the department — promotions that made them the third and fourth women to hold the positions in the 135-year-old department’s history. There were no women among the department’s 41 battalion chiefs late last year before their promotions.
In their new roles, Anunay, 45, and Clemencia, 44, help oversee nearly 100 firefighters at 11 firehouses in the District. They were selected among a pool of 44 candidates — the only two women who qualified during an interview process measuring their preparedness for the high-ranking position.
“They will create a path for all of our young, female firefighters that shows them, ‘Oh, I can do that. That’s within my reach.’ ” D.C. Fire Chief Gregory M. Dean said. “They’re pioneers.”
The Los Angeles prostitute known as “Pretty Hoe” will spend the next decade-and-a-half of her life in federal prison after she admitted to using social media to force young women (some of them minors) into prostitution, authorities said.
23-year-old Melanie Denae Williams, who also called herself the “most hated hoe in LA,” pleaded guilty to a single count of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion back in November.
A federal judge gave “Pretty Hoe” the minimum sentence of 15 years. Had she not pleaded guilty, she would have faced life in prison, if convicted.
According to the U.S. attorney’s office, as part of her plea deal, Williams was also ordered to pay restitution to her victims. A press release described in detail the abuse she doled out to at least one victim.
“Williams ordered the victim to strip off her clothes, then Williams threw bleach on her and used a broomstick to beat her,” the U.S. attorney’s office said in the release, adding that she “continually threatened to kill the victim if she left.”
According to an affidavit filed in the case, Williams also forced the unidentified woman to tattoo her name on her face before confiscating the woman’s belongings and identifying documents.
Williams admitted in her plea agreement to using the internet to recruit two minors for “commercial sex acts” before keeping the proceeds for herself, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
“Williams also posted social media videos of her physically beating and using firearms to threaten young women,” the affidavit stated
Joshua Belete saw Libya, in North Africa, as a stopover, one leg in a journey that would lead to a better life in Europe.
But like thousands of other migrants from across Africa, Belete got stuck. He ended up at a United Nations refugee encampment in Tripoli, Libya’s capital and largest city.
For some, like Belete, entrapment happens on a boat in the middle of the Mediterranean, when the Libyan coast guard reels migrants back and throws them in detention centers. Others never leave shore; instead, they’re cornered by militants or human traffickers, imprisoned and cut off from their loved ones.
“We didn’t even have clothes,” Belete told VOA by phone. “It’s been a long time, and we have nothing.”
After the coast guard brought him back, Belete spent six days in a detention center. He was then taken to Ain Zara, in western Libya, when a conflict broke out between militants and people in the town. Refugees like Belete spent days without food or water, before the United Nations intervened and brought them to Tripoli.
Belete is one of the lucky ones. Many others are kept captive and tortured, their hopes for new beginnings replaced with a brutal existence of torment and extortion that repeats, day after day.
In search of solutions
When African heads of state and government meet at the Summit of the African Union next week in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, they’ll discuss ways to better help refugees and internally displaced people like Belete.
Around the world, more than 68 million people have been forced from their homes, according to the United Nations. Many come from Africa, but it’s also Africa — and not Europe — that hosts the majority of migrants and refugees.
“African migrants go to other African countries where they can be integrated much more easily,” United Nations Secretary General António Guterres told VOA, “and where they face much less problems of xenophobia and racism than when they move to other continents.”
Unlike the rest of the world, Guterres said, Africa benefits from a regional convention for managing internal displacement.
That’s permitted an organized response to forced displacement.
“We need to pay tribute to the generosity of African countries,” Guterres said. “You have African countries, practically without exception, with their borders open to refugees fleeing conflict or persecution. You have enormous solidarity in relation to those refugees.”
The United Nations wants to bring a similar level of coordination to the global stage in the hopes of addressing flashpoints like Libya. In December, the intergovernmental body adopted two compacts designed to improve how the global community manages migration and responds to refugee crises.
The U.N. hopes to use the first compact, focused on migration across borders, to stem forced migration, make migration paths safer and help migrants integrate into their new communities.
The second compact focuses on providing protections to refugees by empowering both origin and host countries, improving refugees’ access to resources and encouraging more “third-country solutions.”
The compacts aren’t legally binding, but they do provide a holistic blueprint that could improve how the world manages migration — if member states play their part.
That’s a concern for Guterres, who worries that developed nations aren’t pulling their weight.
“I would like to see in other parts of the world, especially in richer parts of the world, the same generosity that I have always seen in Africa,” Guterres said.
‘We have scattered’
One country far from the borders most refugees seek to cross that’s stepped up is Canada.
Ottawa has resettled 150 African refugees living in slave-like conditions in Libya. The government plans to take in 500 more in the next two years under its resettlement program, The Canadian Press, the country’s national news agency, reported Wednesday.
But that’s just a fraction of the people trapped.
Libya has become a major chokepoint for refugees from across Africa seeking asylum in Europe. With the country’s infrastructure and civil society in tatters after the fall of Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, militants, traffickers and bandits have thrived. Migrants look for passage to Europe across the Mediterranean but face brutal conditions in one of Africa’s most lawless states.
Idris Adem ended up in the same U.N. center as Belete after following his own harrowing path.
After making it to sea, he too was brought back to Libya, where he found himself in storage houses with migrants from Somalia, Comoros, Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Distinct cultures, ethnicities, languages, all ensnared in an unforgiving place that reduces living to survival.
“We have scattered, and we find ourselves here,” Adem told VOA. “And some of us are here at the U.N., and some of us were kidnapped again and taken backward and returned.”
The Bronx-born rapper made history at the 2019 Grammy Awards on Sunday night by picking up the trophy for Best Rap Album, becoming the first solo female rapper to do so in the category’s 20-plus year history. Lauryn Hill won as a member of the hip-hop group Fugees in 1997.
It’s not like Cardi B even needed the award given how she’d already shut down the red carpet in a vintage couture gown, followed by a show-stopping performance of her new single “Money.” But nothing could compare to the raw emotion she showed in her acceptance speech.
Besting fellow nominees Nipsey Hussle, Pusha T, Travis Scott and the late Mac Miller, the clearly shocked rapper took the stage to deliver a peak Cardi speech.
“The nerves are so bad. Maybe I need to start smoking weed,” Cardi said through the tears, while husband and rapper Offset stood by her side. “I just want to say thank you to everybody that was involved.”
She went onto thank daughter Kulture and touched on her fears surrounding giving birth shortly after dropping the album.
“I’m not just saying thank you because she’s my daughter. It’s because, you know, when I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete, like three songs that I was for sure having,” she said on stage. “And then you know, you know how it was, we was like, we have to get this album done so I could still do videos while I’m still not showing. And it was very long nights.”
Heading into the evening, Cardi B was nominated for seven awards across major categories, including Album of The Year and Record of the Year for her chart-topping single, “I Like It.”
I just heard not to long ago that America was trying to rid themselves of Black History month and i thought i might give my opinion on this matter.Black history month has been around since forever. I remember back when i was 10 years old in the 5 th grade when the month came around all kinds of black history came on the tv. I remember watching shows like Roots that gave me an idea where i came from and where my homeland is at. From there i started to wonder about myself as i got older and realize that all the people i’ve seen growing up did not come from where i did.
As i got older in high school there was a few topics i excels at and those topics was current events, math and history. That was the only topics in high school that got my attention and i was very good at it do to Black History Month. At one time my mind was at a cross roads of what i want to be in life and i was sure i wanted to go to college to be that. My choices was either the Navy , Business, Lawyer. When came down to it i wanted to go into business believe it or not this month had something to do with my up bring . It Gave me pride of waiting for this month after Christmas of course to see all the black shows that seem to pop up about this time of the year . A kind of a bonus to Christmas you might think.
I waited all year for black history to come back so i can look at these shows and movies for a long time until i got older. Very educational and i liked it . Black History is where i got my love for history and i grew from there to wanting go into archaeology . But the problem was my school and where i came from.
To this day i have a love for history and current events but iam no longer a wiz kid in math.
Black History month gives pride to a people that lacks the info of obtaining the information for them selves especially at that time at my tender young age. And at that time at that month the tv was my info library . I just soaked all the info off the tv and applied to my thinking as i got older and it made me what iam today when it comes to history.
So if you ask me do we need Black History Month i say yes. Black History Mouth reminds every one of the civil rights movement every year after the new year has come and reminds the world the plight that Black people had to go threw to reach there goal to be equal, The reason the holiday is not just a day long and a month long is because it is a beacon to all above all our holidays that we can live in peace and to learn from our mistakes of the past and make sure we do not repeat them. Taking away Black History negates those factors and give white supremacy a one up on bring things back to what they used to be.
Personally i do not see why these people in high place would ever think about doing that. Black History Month implants a Identity to African Americans that the school can’t fully do . Those are my thought s in the matter

TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) — Police say a Texas woman used her granddaughter’s scooter to defend herself against a pair of machete-wielding men wearing clown masks who attempted to rob the woman and her husband.
Police say Aretha Cardinal and her husband, Joseph Nelson, were in the driveway of their Texas City home last week when the masked men approached and placed a machete to Nelson’s throat.
Authorities say Nelson wrested away the machete from one man while Cardinal grabbed the child’s scooter from the driveway and used it to strike the other man. Nelson tells Houston television station KTRK the men tried to run away but the couple chased them, smashing their vehicle window with the scooter.
The two suspects have been jailed on aggravated robbery charges.
The black community is in turmoil and i am more then sure that most black men wants to be apart of the family structure in our community . But there are forces at work in this world to destroy an manipulate the so called African American family. Forces that the African American family can’t see from with out and from with in. You might say it is black magic of sorts that must have been used in the past.
9And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. 10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
As a race we have not put the whole armor of God on we have given into play and fun as well as greed and the love of this world the Devil has lead us as a people astray. Now every one wants everything and threw off what is wrong and right in the world.
1 John 2:15
12I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake. 13I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. 15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 18Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
Before the anti christ come this world has to lead the people of the world away from God. That is why when you read the Bible and understand the Bible Whittier you are of a group or not that Devil will come after you and try to make your life a living hell. But you have to ask yourselves why is the Devil not coming for us when we are learning from the preacher in the church?
As a race the further you get from God the worse your nation becomes. And threw manipulation and deception the Devil has lead this race a long way from God himself. The Devil uses music,tv, and greed to further manipulate our people into the Devil’s bussum. Take rap for a minute, They have taken almost all avenues away from black people accept for Basket Ball, Football, Or owning your own business. And not all people can do those things so some have to sell drugs,Rap, or other things that are illegal to feed your kids. They also have the lazy way out section 8 and welfare that keeps the father out of the house. The father plays a big role in the house and with out him your children turn into this.
Most rap artist are in fact in some king of blood gang. At this time that is being a requirement for you to became rap artist. This thing is spiritual and taken the father out of the house causes mayhem on the streets and the trends in this race takes a life of it’s own.Soon these rappers will turn into this:
The question is who are you serving at this point. God, i thing not!!! people dont care but with out the father the black family could wind up having ornamentation to there bodies to get this done. In there minds they think this is normal. It is the testament of your current spiritual condition
2 Esdras 5:8
There shall be a confusion also in many places, and the fire shall be oft sent out again, and the wild beasts shall change their places, and menstruous women shall bring forth monsters:”
At this point that monster spirit is with in us all as a nation some people have it badder then others. The fathers are the key to make the family structure balance with out the balance the world springs in to madness. This universe is about balance if one side tips over the other side takes full control.
Ephesians 5:22-33 King James Version (KJV)
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
The bible tells us that the woman who ever get married summit to your own husbands ,as unto the Lord. I do not know about you that seems very big to me. So ladies , there is no divorce because most of you apply for divorce more then men. To divorce your man is like divorcing your lord . I’ve seen many people that show up in church with there kids by there side and not there husbands. There are many that goes to church who are in fact divorced and getting child support from there man. So in essence they have already divorce there lord long before they go to church
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Its says ,” for the husband is the head of the wife” Not his equal, And the woman is not the head of the husband so ,why the high divorce rate? It goes on to say: even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. So if Christ is the head of the church and the man is the head of his wife are woman trying stop Christ from being head of the church ?Well that same thing applies to the man being head of the family. And the woman is throwing her head over her heels for a system that tries to banish a man from his church witch is the black family with section 8 and welfare. She throw here heels over her head when she wants to go party before sunday and not listen to 1 Johns 2:15.She throws her heels over her head when the powers that be witch are wicked powers come knocking on her door in Ephesians 6:12.She throws her her heels over her head when one of these gang banging blood gang comes over 2 Esdras 5:8
And most of all she throws her heels over her head to destroy or steel or hurt the very man that was created in the image and likeness of God and that is the blackman and she uses this system in Americas to do it Ephesians 5:22-33
So ask your self who are we worshipping when everything we do is against God and the very man that was created in the image and likeness of God. Every law and every thought Eve have is evil toward the man created in the image and likeness of God
If the blackman is in the image and likeness of God tell me why everyone is bent on destroying the only person on this earth that looks and act like the creator according to the Bible . What side you have to be on to do that because i know God created the Blackman in his image not the blackwoman because the bible says the woman was created in Adam’s image and likness.
I will tell you if you can keep a secret!!! You all on the Devils side that is how that is possible.
Proverbs 29:121If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.
You just don’t know the truth but not knowing the truth does not give you a pass with the all mighty
In recent, horrifying news, top investigators on the matter reported that Chinese prison officials are, in fact, harvesting organs from prisoners, most of which are guilty of only committing the crime of following a certain religion.
Known for its unaccountability in reporting prison populations, organ donations, and general treatment of prisoners, these Chinese prisons have the means to get away with this crime. Though the Chinese government claims to have stopped taking organs from prisoners who have been executed, Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting states that new information shows that the amount of organ donations has increased. If the government did indeed stop taking these prisoner donations, how could the organ count go up? Investigators state that the increase in organs is likely from the unofficial harvesting of live prisoner organs.
As though it weren’t cruel enough that the prisons are taking organs from unwilling donors, it’s reported that these victims are still alive and not under any anesthesia when undergoing this painful process. An exposé titled Human Harvest: China’s Organ Trafficking found that around 11,000 organs came from prisoners without anesthetic each year during the eight year long investigation they conducted. Researcher Katrina Bramstedt told Newsweek,
“It is known that Chinese surgeons perform the removal procedure [on political prisoners] and sometimes the ‘donor’ has still been alive during this process — the organ removal process is what actually kills them.”
“It is reported that employees of several transplant centers [in China] have indicated that they have used organs from live Falun Gong practitioners for transplants.”
Falun Gong is a religion secretly practiced in China and worldwide that promotes meditation and physical exercise as a way to be mentally and physically sound. Though their religion is peaceful and does not harm anyone or the government, the crime of belonging to any religion at all is what is illegal in China. It is these peaceful people that are so brutally mistreated and killed.
Despite overwhelming evidence stemming from such investigations, China still maintains that they have never been involved these inhumane practices and that any organs received from prisoners are voluntary donations. Since there is no official donor program in China, these organs go undocumented and can be sold on the black market for a hefty price.
The four hundred year prophecy is happening as we speak and no one is hip to the neither was i until i saw this video. God has bless me with knowledge and now he is letting see the 400 year prophecy come to pass
The fatal police shooting of an armed Alabama man after he was mistaken for a mall shooter in November was “justified and not criminal,” authorities said Tuesday.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall decided that the Hoover, Alabama, officer who fatally shot 21-year-old Emantic “EJ” F. Bradford Jr. will not be criminally charged in the Thanksgiving night shooting.
The officer, who was not identified, mistakenly targeted Bradford after he was seen running toward one of the shooting victims while holding a hand
The officer’s actions “were reasonable under the circumstances and were consistent with his training and nationally-accepted standards for ‘active shooter’ scenarios,” Marshall’s report states.
The officer identified Bradford “as an immediate deadly threat to innocent civilians and thus shot Bradford to eliminate the threat.”
Surveillance video released from inside the Riverchase Galleria mall shows people running shortly after police say shooting suspect Erron Brown, 20, opened fire, wounding a 12-year-old and an 18-year-old.
Bradford appears in the video’s frame and after a brief pause runs in the opposite direction that people are fleeing. After taking several steps he collapses to the ground and his handgun slides to the floor ahead of him. At least one police officer can be seen approaching him from behind with a firearm drawn.
Though the mall’s policy forbids handguns, Bradford’s father, Emantic Bradford Sr., said his son had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Marshall’s report says there was no evidence that Bradford’s handgun was fired at the mall. It adds that the FBI also reviewed the case and, from his understanding, found no evidence to initiate a case against the officer for civil rights violations.
Here is some of my thought about the blackwoman’s need for mayhem. The mother of the earth is on a deep end in the united state so much she does not know the position she holds on a world scale and she continues to spread her crazy ideology threw the black family with out a care in the world on how she looks on a global scale. One time i was watching the news and our black brothers and sister around the world caught my attention when they said that African Americans where out of control and they are embarrassing to the rest of our brothers and sisters over sea’s. That was an eye opener for me because i started to look at our people as a whole and i agreed with our sisters and brothers over seas. I am not talk about the Africans now iam talking about our brothers and sister who the slave masters did not catch in Africa and the ones that was shipped around the world.
The black American sister do not know the level of heat her actions have placed on our race on the international stage. Since the blackwoman is the lead in the family and the father is no where around most people know that the African American sisters are in fact in charge of the African American family. The woman does not have a care in the world when she goes on tv and explains why she can’t get a good man while holding on a law degree from Harvard university. Most of our brothers and sister over seas have a higher marriage rate then just 30% and most of our brothers and sister do not enjoy the life that we have here in America but these women are single and can’t find a man. You have bums like Steve Harvey giving relationship advice and this bum can’t stay married he is on his third wife. Everyone that work with this man says that he treats his employees like crap. But this man can go on national tv and tell people what to do in a relationship. This is how crazy this country is and most of these men was raised in single parent house holds. Every one know what a pimp dress like and Steve Harvey looks and acts like a pimp and they just eat his advice up .
Most of our men are in jail because whither they know or not they was trying to impress a black female by making something out of himself by selling drugs and guns. In the black community it is not a good thing if you graduated from High School much less go to college. The whole black community has been groomed from birth to be bums or try to get inside some game where you can sell drugs and have guns and this leads to prison. They even have a high school to prison pipe line where even the civilized world know that black people are bowed to end up in prison.
Like Malcom x said the woman is the first teacher of the child what the child ends up to be is all on her skills as a parent. The woman do not need the man anymore because of section 8 and welfare. This is the main reason the man is not in the home raising his kids, I have first hand knowledge on how women raise there kids in the ghetto iam just glad i had goals of my own and i thought there must be another way.
The blackwomen is grooming our brothers and sisters to be criminals i have no idea where she get here parent skills but here parents skills could be only taught by the devil himself. Weather she agree with that assessment or not is not important you can see the results.
1. Data shows that 93 percent of black homicide victims are killed by other blacks.
The left’s rebuttal is that that 84 percent of white homicide victims are killed by other whites, but The Wall Street Journal‘s Jason Riley points out that the white crime rate is “much lower than the black rate.”
2. According to Riley, “Blacks commit violent crimes at 7 to 10 times the rate that whites do.”
Blacks committed 52 percent of homicides between 1980 and 2008, despite composing just 13 percent of the population. Across the same timeframe, whites committed 45 percent of homicides while composing 77% of the population, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
3. Black crime is even more prevalent in the country’s largest cities and counties.
Heather Mac Donald writes in her book The War on Cops: How the New Attack on Law and Order Makes Everyone Less Safe that in Chicago, IL, blacks committed 76 percent of all homicides, despite composing 35 percent of the city’s population. Blacks also accounted for 78 percent of all juvenile arrests. Whites, who compose 28 percent of the city’s population, committed 4 percent of its homicides and 3.5 percent of its juvenile arrests. Hispanics, who compose 30 percent of the city’s population, committed 19 percent of its homicides and 18 percent of its juvenile arrests. (Another eye-opening fact from Mac Donald’s research is that only 26 percent of murder cases were solved in Chicago.)
Blacks are 10 percent of the population in Los Angeles, CA, but commit 42 percent of its robberies and 34 percent of its felonies. Whites make up 29 percent of the city’s population, and commit 5 percent of its robberies and 13 percent of its felonies.
In New York City, blacks committed “75 percent of all shootings, 70 percent of all robberies, and 66 percent of all violent crime,” despite only composing 23 percent of the population, said Mac Donald in a Hillsdale speech. Additionally, 2009 Bureau of Justice Statistics numbers show that in 2009, “blacks were charged with 62 percent of robberies, 57 percent of murders and 45 percent of assaults in the 75 biggest counties in the country, despite only comprising roughly 15 percent of the population in these counties.”
4. There were almost 6,000 blacks killed by other blacks in 2015.
By contrast, only 258 blacks were killed by police gunfire that year.
5. The percentage of blacks arrested for crimes is consistent with police reports.
This is according to the National Crime Victimization Survey, as well as this 1985 study:
“Even allowing for the existence of discrimination in the criminal justice system, the higher rates of crime among black Americans cannot be denied,” wrote James Q. Wilson and Richard Herrnstein in their classic 1985 study, “Crime and Human Nature.” “Every study of crime using official data shows blacks to be overrepresented among persons arrested, convicted, and imprisoned for street crimes.” This was true decades before the authors put it to paper, and it remains the case decades later.
“The overrepresentation of blacks among arrested persons persists throughout the criminal justice system,” wrote Wilson and Herrnstein. “Though prosecutors and judges may well make discriminatory judgments, such decisions do not account for more than a small fraction of the overrepresentation of blacks in prison.”
This data disproves the notion that racism is what drives higher rates of arrests among the blacks than among whites or broader America.
6. According to Riley, “Black crime rates were lower in the 1940s and 1950s, when black poverty was higher” and “racial discrimination was rampant and legal.”
If it’s not racism and poverty that are blame for the high black crime rate, then what is?
7. According to Mac Donald, “A straight line can be drawn between family breakdown and youth violence.”
As economist Thomas Sowell points out, before the 1960s “most black children were raised in two-parent families.” In 2013, over 72 percent of blacks were born out of wedlock. In Cook County –which Chicago belongs to – 79 percent of blacks were born to single mothers in 2003, while only 15 percent of whites were born to single mothers.
“Until that gap closes, the crime gap won’t close, either,” writes Mac Donald.

The Philadelphia 76ers are adding another big name to their starting lineup.
Tobias Harris is heading to Philadelphia as part of a six-player trade with the Los Angeles Clippers, according to two people with knowledge of the deal. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the trade has not be announced.
The 76ers will also receive forward Mike Scott and center Boban Marjanovic in the deal, while shipping guard Landry Shamet, forwards Wilson Chandler and Mike Muscala, two first-round draft picks and two second-round picks to Los Angeles.
The details of the trade were first reported by ESPN, which added that Philadelphia plans to try to re-sign both Harris and Jimmy Butler in the offseason to build a long-term core alongside young stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.
Harris, 26, was leading the Clippers in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 20.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. The Tennessee product will be playing for his fifth team in eight seasons.
Marjanovic and Scott are averaging 6.7 and 4.8 points per game, respectively.
The Clippers, meanwhile, will receive a mixture of veteran players and future assets. Shamet, a rookie, is averaging 8.3 points per game in a reserve role, while Muscala and Chandler have posted averages 7.4 and 6.7 points per game, respectively. The deal also included Philadelphia’s protected 2020 first-round pick, and the Heat’s unprotected first-round pick in 2021,
Speaking to reporters while on a historic tour of the Middle East on Tuesday, the pontiff admitted that the Church had an issue, the roots of which lie in “seeing women as second class”.
He said that priests and bishops had abused nuns, but said the Church was aware of the “scandal” and was “working on it”, adding that a number of clerics had been suspended.
“It’s a path that we’ve been on,” he said.
“Pope Benedict had the courage to dissolve a female congregation which was at a certain level, because this slavery of women had entered it – slavery, even to the point of sexual slavery – on the part of clerics or the founder.”
Pope Francis said sexual abuse of nuns was an ongoing problem, but happened largely in “certain congregations, predominantly new ones”.
“I think it’s still taking place because it’s not as though the moment you become aware of something it goes away.”
Where is the abuse said to have taken place?
The female congregation dissolved in 2005 under Pope Benedict was the Community of St Jean, which was based in France, Alessandro Gisotti of the Vatican press office told CBS News.
In 2013, the Community of St Jean admitted that priests had behaved “in ways that went against chastity” with several women in the order, according to the French Roman Catholic newspaper La Croix.
Ben Carson has proven to be one of the most deplorable secretaries of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in our country’s history. However, in the Trump administration, the worse job you do, the more you are rewarded. Therefore, Carson will now be in charge of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), CBS News reported.
God help those residents.
Carson met with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio Thursday.
“The families who have endured unimaginably poor housing conditions deserve better from their housing authority,” Carson said. “Today we are presenting NYCHA residents with bold new solutions for decades-old problems.”
De Blasio responded positively to the news.
“What we have done here today creates a strong path forward, a tangible path forward,” the mayor said. “It will change and improve the lives of public housing residents. We wanted to make sure there would be results.”
CBS News reported: “As part of the agreement, New York City will commit at least $2.2 billion in funding over the next 10 years to address the housing authority issues. HUD will continue to provide funding to NYCHA, estimated to be $1.5 billion this year.”
A federal monitor will be hired as part of the deal.
“Now they want a monitor? NYCHA already has monitors — its residents who have suffered from decades of disinvestment,” New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer said. “They’re the parents who sought help when their child got lead poisoning. The grandmother who has to huddle near a stove when it’s colder inside her apartment than outside. And the family dealing with health issues because of rampant mold in their home.”
He continued, “The time for talk and political stunts is over. Cut the long overdue check from the federal government to fully fund the needed repairs, listen to the real NYCHA monitors, put a plan in place, and get to work.”
Back in December, the New York Daily News reported almost the entire city congressional delegation were fighting “against placing the city’s troubled Housing Authority into federal receivership.”
Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-Brooklyn, wrote in a letter, “Although there’s no easy answer here, the one thing that should be a nonstarter is a Trump takeover of NYCHA, which could lead to the selling of assets and tenant displacement without any local input.”
She continued, “Certainly, additional resources are needed from all levels of government — including federal, state and local — as is a comprehensive review of NYCHA operations and personnel. But, we can’t enable a situation that results in the Trump administration essentially holding a fire sale of NYCHA assets.”
Carson has been feuding with NYCHA since he was appointed secretary. The former doctor has been upset with funding going to NYCHA.
“We don’t want to do it that way, but they forced us into doing it that way until they become more responsible,” he told the Wall Street Journal in April.
In case you forgot, here are just some of Carson failures: He was accused of demoting an employee for not approving extravagant office renovations, including a $31,000 dining room set. There are accusations his family was too involved at HUD, emails proving he has lied and even reports of Carson using taxpayer money for private planes. In addition, there were Obama-era policies that would help people out of poverty, which he ended.
Prayers up for the people living in New York City Housing Authority.
The Waller County Jail was supposed to implement reforms after Bland’s death.
An African-American inmate was recently found dead after apparently hanging himself in the same Texas jail where Sandra Bland also died in 2015, the Houston Chronicle reported. Authorities at the Waller County jail said on Wednesday that Evan Lyndell Parker, 34, attempted suicide on Jan. 25 and died two days later in a hospital.
Parker was accused of killing a 64-year-old co-worker on Jan. 9, according to the Waller County Sheriff’s Office. He was booked into the jail the next day on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The Waller County District Attorney stated that it was unclear what led to Parker to attempt to kill himself.
“All outside agency investigations that include the Texas Rangers and Texas Commission on Jail Standards are pending along with autopsy results,” Sheriff R. Glenn Smith said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Bland’s death prompted police reforms that could have prevented Parker’s death. For one thing, face-to-face cell inspections were supposed to occur more frequently after she died. The Chronicle noted that Parker died a month after inspectors found that the jailers failed to meet standards for observing prisoners.
Bland was found hanging in her cell on July 13, 2015, three days after being arrested during a traffic stop. Although her death was ruled a suicide, her family members and activists disputed the cause of death and said racial violence was involved. Her family settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $1.9 million with Waller County officials and the state trooper who arrested Bland near Prairie View A & M University.
It was unclear if foul play was somehow involved in Parker’s death.
“All I can say is, it’s extremely unfortunate when it happens,” Waller County Judge Trey Duhon said. “Even with the best of precautions, it is always possible that somebody intent on taking their life could be successful. All we can do is make sure we meet guidelines and do the routine checks. At this point, it looks like that was done.”
Duhon also rejected criticism from inmate advocates who raised questions about standards at the jail.
“They’re certainly entitled to their opinions, but anybody who wants to come down to our jail and see all the changes and processes we’ve made since 2015 is welcome to do that,” Duhon added.
,There were plenty of jobs created in January, just none for African-Americans, apparently.
The unemployment rate for Black people in America has been quietly creeping back up to its sky-high levels from last year just months after the president bragged they were at their lowest. Meanwhile, the number of payroll jobs increased by nearly double the rate it was projected to, according to employment numbers for January released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Friday, which was also the start to Black History Month.
Those two figures that were trending in opposite directions resulted in the overall unemployment rate to also rise to 4 percent in part because of the “impact of the partial federal government shutdown,” BLS wrote in its report.
While the shutdown ended last week after more than a month, its effects were expected to linger, especially among African-Americans, who make up more than 18 percent of government employees, according to the Guardian. For a full perspective, Black people only make up 12 percent of the American population.
The combination of all of the above resulted in a 6.8 percent Black unemployment rate for January, the highest since it was 7.7 percent in January 2018. It was just a 6 percent in November, underscoring what could become a worsening trend for African-Americans looking for work.
However, if there was a silver lining, it was the lingering reminder of former President Barack Obama’s amazing handiwork in reviving the American economy following the great recession of 2008. Because of it and in spite of President Donald Trump’s best efforts to undermine that work, there were more than 300,000 jobs added to payrolls last month.
A fact check found that “the black unemployment rate has been in a years-long downward trend that continued under Trump” … albeit at a slower pace than in recent years.” Now, it looks as if that trend has now reversed itself as it pertains to Black people out of a job.
Still, if there is another shutdown in two weeks, as the president has threatened to help make happen, February’s unemployment rates for the U.S. as a whole and Black workers, in particular, are almost assured to keep on rising. That would be a bad sign for a president who campaigned in part on job creation and has already begun his re-election efforts.
Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for white men and white women stood at 3.5 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively. The unemployment rate for Asians fell to 3.1 percent.
Brooklyn, NY — Todd Myles, a basketball coach at a high school in New York City, has been charged and arrested for shooting Christopher Hooks, the father of one of his players, who apparently showed up to his house to confront him about his son’s short playing time.
The shooting incident happened on December 22 last year. The police were called to Myles’ house, where Myles claimed that a third man shot them and immediately fled the scene.
Hooks was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. He was intubated and couldn’t talk to the investigators about the incident for about a month. When he recovered, he told a completely different story.
Myles, a 42-year-old basketball coach at Paul Robeson High School, allegedly lied to the police about what happened. Hooks said it was Myles who shoot him, not any other random man.
Although Myles was actually also shot in his legs, it wasn’t clear yet if he deliberately shot himself in an attempt to cover up his doings or if the bullet ricocheted.
Myles was arrested and taken into custody on Friday for charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal use of a firearm.
The Department of Education called the allegations against Myles “incredibly shocking” and issued a statement saying, “We immediately reassigned Mr. Myles away from students and we’ll work to remove him from payroll as soon as legally possible. We are providing support to the school and are working with the NYPD throughout this investigation.”
Thousands of Israelis of Ethiopian descent took to the streets of Tel Aviv Wednesday to protest the police killing of Yehuda Biadga. The 24-year old Israeli-Ethiopian man, who had a mental illness, was holding a knife when he was shot and killed. His family had called the police for help and informed them of his mental illness. Protesters blocked traffic on a major highway as they called out police brutality and racism.
Michal Avara Samuel: “We’re here. We had so many years of dreaming to be a part of the Israeli society, and today we are saying, ‘No more violence against us.’”
