Two Mothers Protesting Gun Violence Was Killed During A Drive Bye

Two mothers in Chicago have been killed in a drive-by shooting as they stood on a street corner in an effort to deter gun violence.

Chantell Grant and Andrea Stoudemire were volunteers for Mothers Against Senseless Killings and had been camped out at the corner to prevent conflict.

They were shot on Friday evening by the occupants of a blue SUV. No arrests have yet been made.

Supporters say they are shocked by the killing and will honour their memories.

“It is sacred ground, as far as we’re concerned,” said Mothers Against Senseless Killings (Mask) member Maria Pike, referring to the South Side Chicago street corner policed by the fallen mums.

“This was a haven that was built by moms,” she told ABC 7 in Chicago. “The lack of humanity is shocking,” she added.

Grant was a 26-year-old mother of four and Stoudemire was a 35-year-old mother of three.

The women were hit around 22:00 local time (03:00 GMT Saturday) while standing on West 75th Street and South Stewart Avenue in the city’s violence-plagued Englewood neighbourhood.

“It is terrifying. It is heartbreaking. I haven’t slept because I am trying to figure out how we can stop this,” Tamar Manasseh, founder of Mask, told the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Who’s next? I just keep thinking, Who’s next?”

The group began occupying the corner around four years ago, and host barbeques there throughout the summer, in the hope that their constant presence will deter violence.

They have also offered counselling and guidance to community members, according to friends and activists.

A 58-year-old man who was present suffered a graze wound to his arm.

“It’s too much around here,” said the man, who did not wish to be identified, as he returned to the shooting scene to pay respects at an impromptu memorial.

“The older people can’t come out and sit on the porch; the kids can’t play,” he told the Chicago Sun-Times. “It’s just, wow. Everyone is scared.”

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement that the murders were under investigation, and that investigators “have no evidence that we can point to that suggests the women were the intended targets”.

“We also have no evidence to the contrary,” he added.

Meleah Davis And The Casket She Was Buried In After Her Body Was Found

Maleah Davis — the 4-year-old found dead after she went missing in early May — will be buried in a colorful, one-of-a-kind casket, a tribute to her memory and her grieving family.

The casket was built and donated by SoulShine Industries to the Davis family.

“The casket is the most important part of remembering somebody, so it should be special,” said company owner Trey Ganem told CNN.

Ganem said that he received over 200 calls from the community asking him to make a casket for the Davis family. She will be buried in a private funeral on Saturday.

“It was such a blessing to provide something special for this loving family,” Ganem said.

The casket designer Courtney Sublett told CNN she worked closely with the family and the theme quickly became apparent. The final product was a white casket covered with rainbows, the color pink, “My Little Pony,” and even a portrait of Maleah.

“It’s such a tragic thing, I’m glad we could bring a little light to her story,” Sublett said.

The funeral home that is hosting the funeral, Richardson Mortuary, has been collecting flowers and condolences on behalf of the family, CNN affiliate KTRK.

Toys and teddy bears are also being collected at the apartment complex where the Davis family lived. A sign says that the items will be displayed at the funeral and then donated to the Houston Fire Department.

Meleah’s remains were found in Arkansas on May 30, according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo. Her mother’s former fiancé, Derion Vence, is charged with tampering with a corpse in connection to Meleah’s death.

Georgia woman accused of starving, burning stepdaughter 4/20/2019

Jury selection will continue Tuesday in the murder trial of a Gwinnett County woman accused of feeling hurt stepdaughter through a slow and agonizing starvation.

In 2013, Gwinnett County investigators found the charred body of 10-year-old Emani Moss stuffed inside at an apartment complex. Investigators say the girl weighed only 32 pounds at the time of her death.

Investigators say Emani’s stepmother, Tiffany Moss, and her dad, Eman Moss, are responsible for her brutal death.

In 2015, Eman Moss pleaded guilty to felony murder and cruelty to children, saying that he had made a “terrible mistake.” He’s now serving life without parole and is slated to testify against is estranged wife.

In 2015, Moss’ attorney says the father chose not to take Emani to the hospital in the weeks before she died because Tiffany had previously been arrested for beating Emani. His lawyer also claimed he was unaware of the abuse and starvation Emani endured– claiming Tiffany was responsible for taking care of his daughter while he was at work.

Moss was relatively quiet during the first day of jury selection at the Gwinnett County Courthouse, but did ask a few jurors about their ability to be impartial given the gruesome evidence jurors will hear in the case.

District Attorney Danny Porter and Judge George Hutchinson questioned every juror about their ability to impartially hear the evidence and potentially render a death sentence if Moss is convicted.

Tiffany Moss’ trial was scheduled for July of last year but was postponed while two lawyers from the state’s public defender system appealed to try to overturn a lower court’s decision allowing Moss to represent herself.

The Georgia Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal, which means Moss will be able to act as her own lawyer.

If she is found guilty, it will be the first death sentence in the state of Georgia in more than five years. Judge Hutchinson indicated jury selection would take the rest of the week, with opening statements from prosecutors and the murder defendant next week.

Keith and Valeria Smith left prison near the Mexican border Wednesday morning and began their extradition back to Baltimore to stand trial for the murder of Jacquelyn Smith.

Around 9:30 a.m., authorities escorted the father and daughter from the Cameron County Detention Center in South Texas, said Sheriff Omar Lucio, who runs the prison.

Coverage of the killing of Jacquelyn Smith »

“I checked with my jailer. They didn’t say anything. They knew where they were going,” Lucio said. “They didn’t create any kind of commotion.”

Their quiet departure marked the end of what police described as a run for the Mexican border with detectives closing in on the alleged murderers. Jacquelyn Smith’s husband, Keith Smith, said she was fatally stabbed after she rolled down a car window to give money to a panhandler in East Baltimore. But Baltimore police said Sunday that Keith Smith and his stepdaughter had been arrested in Smith’s death. Jacquelyn Smith, 54, of Aberdeen was an electrical engineer at Aberdeen Proving Ground. She was stabbed five times in her chest and killed in December, and the crime shocked the conscience of Baltimore residents. Her husband, Keith , and his daughter, Valeria , claimed the killing happened […]

Mother and daughter charged in ‘atrocious’ killing of five family members in Pennsylvania 2/28/2019

No one answered when a social worker knocked on the door.

Not Shana Decree or her three children. Not her sister or her three children.

All was quiet inside unit S-7 at Robert Morris Apartments – because most of the people who lived there were dead.

It’s not clear why the case worker was checking on the apartment in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, near the Delaware River. But when there was no response Monday afternoon, she asked a maintenance worker to unlock the door, according to court documents.

The scene inside was straight from nightmares: Overturned furniture, shattered glass and clutter throughout the home. Two disoriented women. And five bodies, including three children, in a backroom.

The details come from an affidavit for probable cause, which accuses Shana Selena Decree, 45, and her daughter, Dominique Klaran Decree, 19 – the two who were found alive – of killing the other five.

The two women are each facing five counts of criminal homicide and one count of conspiracy to commit criminal homicide.

It was not immediately clear whether who is representing them.

Authorities identified the victims as Shana Decree’s children Naa’Irah Smith, 25, and Damon Decree Jr., 13; Shana Decree’s sister, Jamilla Campbell, 42; and Campbell’s 9-year-old twin daughters, Imani and Erika Allen. Another relative, Campbell’s 17-year-old son, Joshua, has been found unharmed, police said.

Authorities said that there are no other suspects in the case.

“I am sure that you’re going to ask me why this has occurred and what the motivation is, and as confusing as it was night, we are no closer to understanding that in the harsh light of day,” Bucks County District Attorney Matthew Weintraub said Tuesday during a news conference. “We will continue to pursue every lead and to work this case to its just conclusion. I expect that will be a long and laborious process, but we will always keep Naa’Irah, Damon, Jamilla, Erika and Imani first and foremost in our minds and our hearts as we work to get justice for them.”

Weintraub told reporters Tuesday that authorities are investigating the brutal massacre to determine how exactly the family members died, when it happened and why they may have been killed.

When asked whether it may have been a murder-suicide pact, the district attorney said it was a “potentiality.”

Police responded to the home about 4 p.m. Monday and found Shana and Dominique Decree “disoriented” in bed. The two were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to court records.

Meanwhile, according to the court records, police uncovered a gruesome scene in a backroom in the apartment – one person’s body was face-up on a bed, with his head toward the end and his right foot through the wall to the next room.

Another was on the bed, and one was sitting up against it. One of the children was on the floor. And one person was buried beneath another body.

During an interview with police, Shana and Dominique Decree denied knowing what had happened, then told police Campbell’s boyfriend and two other men had come into the apartment and killed the victims, according to the court records.

Later, Shana Decree told police the victims, including the three children, wanted to die and had been discussing suicide, according to the court records.

Ultimately, police said, Shana and Dominique Decree told investigators about a complicated plan that allegedly involved some of the victims killing each other – at least one of them being choked to death – and then Shana and Dominique Decree killing the rest of them, according to the court documents.

Authorities said the 17-year-old boy, who has since been found safe, was not at home during the killings.

Shana Decree was arraigned in the early hours of Tuesday morning and her daughter, Dominique, was arraigned in the afternoon. Both women are being held without bail, according to booking records.

“I just feel very confident that we have the two killers locked up that committed these atrocious, atrocious murders,” Weintraub, the district attorney, said.

Texas girl, 14, is sentenced to 25 years in prison for stabbing her friend to death during an argument over a sleepover ‘while her mother watched and did nothing’ 2/19/2019

A 14-year-old Texas girl has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for stabbing her friend to death during an argument over a sleepover.

The teen from Fort Worth, who is not named due to her age, stabbed Nylah Lightfoot, 14, in the chest and neck when she went to pick up her clothes from her friend’s home on May 29, 2018.

The victim’s mother Anntoinette Carter claimed that the mother of the then-13-year-old suspect stood by and watched the altercation between the two girls unfold, without stepping in.

The defendant was found guilty of murder but not guilty on aggravated assault charges in Tarrant County court on Thursday, and faced a minimum sentence of probation and maximum of 40 years in prison.

The girl will be held in a Texas Juvenile Justice Department facility, according to presiding Judge Alex Kim.

The court will determine whether to transfer her to an adult prison or grant her leniency on or before her 19th birthday.

Carter delivered a victim’s impact statement after the sentence was announced, telling her daughter’s killer: ‘When they told me it was you, it hurt. You was at my house every day.’

The heartbroken mother said that her daughter wanted to become a makeup artist, and that would sneak into her bedroom to get makeup for herself and the friend.

Now, Carter said, she will never get to see that passion again, nor will she see her daughter go to prom, graduate high school or get married.

‘You spent her last birthday with us. I don’t know how I come back from this,’ she said through tears.

Carter had previously described her daughter and the suspect as ‘on-and-off’ friends.

On the day she was killed, Nylah asked if the girl could sleepover, to which Carter said no, according to The Star-Telegram

Then the suspect asked Nylah to come over and retrieve clothes she had swapped with the teen.

When she arrived at the girl’s Fort Worth apartment complex, the pair got into an altercation that turned deadly.

The little girl was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital for her neck and chest wounds where she was pronounced dead, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.

‘Now I’m daughterless. And my heart feels like it’s just been ripped out and stomped on,’ Carter said at the time.

Nylah had gone over to the suspect’s apartment complex in Fort Worth (above) to retrieve clothes she left with her when the friends got into an altercation. The 14-year-old was stabbed in the chest and neck and later died from her wounds

The Nylah’s murder trial only lasted two days. When the suspect took the stand, she said killing her best friend it was something that she would forever regret.

‘She was like a sister to me,’ she testified.

Prosecutor Jim Hudson said during his closing statement: ‘The case was graphic, disturbing and unsettling. Because of the decisions she made, a family now lives without a daughter.

‘We ask that you send a message to her that these acts have consequences.’

He continued: ‘There is no arguing what her intent was. When she came outside with the knife she was still in control. But not even her friend could stop her. She was only following through with what she had threatened twice.’

Teen found brutally murdered with mother one day before his birthday 2/19/2019

A mother and her teenage son were fatally stabbed, strangled and bludgeoned with a gym weight in their Bronx apartment by a fiend who callously threw torn-up money on the woman’s body before fleeing, sources told The Post.

Marisol Ortiz, 51, of Belmont, and her youngest son, Alanche del Orbe, who was a day away from turning 15, were found dead at 3:38 p.m. Sunday in their East 185th Street apartment and police were searching into the late-night hours for the woman’s ex-con boyfriend, sources said.

The crime was incredibly vicious. While both had been bashed with a heavy weight, the mother was also stabbed in the head and the boy strangled, according to law enforcement sources.

Ortiz’s 22-year-old daughter discovered the bloody bodies.

“I just heard the daughter screaming,” an upstairs neighbor, Iris Rosa, 58, told The Post. “I didn’t hear no words. It was just ‘Ahhhhh!’ And then nothing.”

The daughter, whose name was not released, had rushed home after the mom’s colleagues called to say she hadn’t been to work Sunday.

Ortiz, a business owner, had not shown up in the morning to open her store, and her distraught daughter called police.

“She was on the sidewalk, on the phone,” Rosa said. “She was crying.”

When cops arrived, they found the mother of four dead on the floor in one room and the boy, who may have been attacked as he slept, dead on a bed in another.

A bloody knife was found near the teen. Cops believe the killer left an exercise weight by each body after using them to bludgeon their heads, according to a law enforcement source.

A source also said cops found torn money on the mom’s body, but could give no more details.

Police did not immediately release the name of the boyfriend, who sources said has a prison record for assault.

Cops could not say exactly when the murders happened, but a neighbor, Angel Cabrera, told NBC News that he heard screaming at 1 or 2 a.m., but had thought it was from a party.

Haydee Leonardo, del Orbe’s grieving cousin, told The Post outside the apartment Sunday night, “Tomorrow is his birthday.”

The youngster’s Facebook page shows him to have been a Yankees fan who enjoyed rap music and playing baseball with his father.

“It’s incredibly sad,” Leonardo said.
